mapp gas torch blowing out

can someone steer me in the right direction to solve a problem with my mapp gas torch blowing out.

the gas cannister is new and has been kept in a relative warm place..the torch bit is also new..

i use it to melt gold/brass and it gets to a certain point and then blows out...i have the cannister at a 'horizontal to tipping down' level and the melting material is in a small crucible..

any ideas ? ... - .- -.

Stan, I think it needs to be more vertical, you want to burn gas not liquid.
That's how my torch works.

so do you think the liquid is stopping the gas from coming out evenly? ... - .- -.

That's what I was thinking, but I'm wrong.

I just had to nip to my workshop to get some tools so I tested my torch and it works i any direction. So sorry about that. It must be my plumbers torch on butane that doesn't work upside down.

So I don't know what is wrong, but as they are both new I would take them back. Range Rover 4.2 Supercharged 2006

My MAP gas torch does the same Stan, works perfectly when vertical to horizontal but tipping it over further, i.e. more upside down and it tends to go out. I just work around it but good to know if there is a solution or just the way they work. Jonathan

Laughing

she does wonder why i offered to clean her wedding rings...

@jonathan, thanks for the confirmation...googling suggests the liquid in the bottle blocks the gas coming out... ... - .- -.

What torch have you got Stan, I’ve got a rothenberger super fire 2 and use it mostly on Mapp and it works any way up. 🤷‍♂️

You can get flexi torches with a bendy head on them if you need it to point one specific way but want to keep the bottle up. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Without doubt you are allowing liquid to exit torch. Its a gas burner, hold the cylinder vertical this allows only gas to exit! 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I have two different torches, one with a pencil flame I use on brake pipe connections and the other for plumbing jobs which started flairing up after purchase a new cylinder, after swopping cylinders about it's down to the cylinder so only I would say is try a different cylinder, as an aside had to sign in on my phone for this reply and boy is it hard work! (It's an age thing)

Yep, very old “proper” one Stan….. they seem to be stupid money at the moment. Was looking to replace it recently with a new one as the trigger is iffy and the flow control knob is fubar but will solder on with it for a bit longer.

I use the rothenburger gas as well with them, never had an issue.
