Supercharged 4.2 reduced power

Hi Folks

I have a 2007 4.2 Supercharged with 150k on the clock. I've had a recent issue where the car looses power.

It only occurs if I bury the throttle, say on an over take. The revs will rise and then it's almost like hitting a wall and it just wont rev. Its often then accompanied by a whistling type of noise which I can only describe as being like a turbo car that has had a hose split.

Prior to it occurring the power is there when your using slower throttle inputs the revs will rise, gear changes as normal etc. It's just if you bury the throttle that the issue occurs.

Once it's happened you're stuck with very low power no matter how you drive - no messages, or errors or fault codes.

If I park up for 30 mins or so it goes back to normal, no whistling noise and full power if you use gentle throttle increase and all goes wrong again if I bury the throttle.

I have an Icarsoft i930 scanner so can access real time data. Anyone got any thoughts on what the issue could be adn what I need to looking at.

Thanks in advance
James

It sounds like the rubber air intake which feeds the air flow meter has collapsed between the inner wing and airbox. Check that first.

If that’s ok, then check the air filter as the 4.2 sucks a massive amount of air and the filter could be blocked or semi blocked.

Regards

John

Thanks for the response, the air filter is new but I'll check out the intake hose in the wing and report back!

Could be the electric auxiliary coolant pump, had something similar happen on foot buried acceleration and it was the pump on its last legs, about 150 quid, iirc, make sure the wiring is correct, as some had the wrong orientation, ie pump rotating the wrong direction. Should be able to find which vin numbers were affected with a search on various sites inc here. 👍

I've already replaced the aux coolant pump in the the hope it might have been that but no difference (the wiring is correct). The annoying thing is I get no dash messages or no fault codes so I'm struggling to pin point it. I'll have a look at the wing intake this evening - I'm really hoping for something simple as it's already been an expensive year for it!

Many thanks John. This was spot on, rubber boot had collapsed. I’ve removed and gone for a spirited drive and all seems good. New one on order.
