Is This my EGR Intake Pipe Gone?

Driving home, about 5 miles out my L322 TDV8 suddenly starts sounding like a motorboat, horrendously loud like an major exhaust leak. No warning light, car drove fairly OK, down on power but just embarrassingly loud.

So managed to have a look today and I think I have worked it out to be the EGR Intake Pipe, the picture below is way down at the back of the RHS (as you stand at the front) low down, it got my attention because there was a bit of frayed material hanging loose. With the engine running if I get my hand all the way down there the pipe is obviously loose and if I move it back into its correct position the blowing stops. There is a video of this here: https://we.tl/t-4RImNCFdRI

I'm fairly sure its the part numbered "1" in the below diagram;

Which from a quick look on eBay looks like this;

So I have a couple of questions;

(1) Can anyone confirm this is the correct part that would appear to be the culprit?

(2) Apart from the horrendous noise it makes, is there any damage to be done by having driven it a short distance?

(3) How easy is this is do on a drive way or is it best to let the professionals tackle it and is it going to be expensive!!?

I'm not really in the mood for rolling round on the floor for 2 days to get to a part that is almost impossible to access without the right tools, experience and method.

Thoughts?

Jon

Jon,

I think your diagnosis is correct. I've responded to your PM.
It appears to be the same failure I had.
I'm guessing the EGR pip manufacture quality control wasn't very good on the early TDv8 engines !

I think I covered everything to DIY the problem - if you feel inclined.
For those interested, here's a link to my thread with the fix

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would close this one out with an update.

Pawl gave me some valuable and sage advice which I think helped with a successful outcome.

So to recap, the car was blowing an exhaust leak type noise, but horrendously loud from the cabin. Having correctly diagnosed the problem to be the EGR intake pipe on the NS of the car, having separated from the flange where it joins the manifold, the next job was to get a replacement part.

I found a good used item on the bay of E, and having given it a bit of additional TIG weld around both the flanges and a clean up, I just has to get it swapped.

I followed Pawl's excellent write up to start spraying the lower bolts on the broken bit of the pipe at the exhaust manifold end with penetrant. I got to it from underneath, just lift the car enough to make it comfortable underneath, you don't have to remove anything as you can just see the offending flange bolts through the gaps between the exhaust and the body. Sprayed it liberally for 2/3 days.

I had decided to let the garage tackle the job as it was booked in for rear brakes and an MOT anyway and so helped them a little by removing the HVAC filter box and engine cover and then loosened off the top three bolts just to make sure they were OK. I left the bottom two to the garage but having had a fumble around its certainly possible as a DIY job if you are careful with the lower bolts on the manifold. This is what the top two bolts look like at the back of the engine which are quite easy to get at from the top.

The report back from the garage was that it involved a bit of swearing but other than that quite straight forward.

Everything back together, brakes and MOT done. A fully working (almost) car again - now where do I find some wood to touch ...............
