Which Engine ?

I currently own a 2018 4.4V8 diesel Autobiography, covered 80K miles, never had a single issue. Should i change to a L460? Worth it? If so would i be disappointed with the newer diesels over the V8? Or should i go petrol or hybrid?
All advice welcome.

I swapped a 2019 L405 SDV8 VSE for a L460 D350 HSE last year. I’d driven more than 100k+ miles in SDV8’s previously.

The comfy seats and drivetrain are the best upgrades. The drivetrain is so smooth and hardly noticeable. On a long run 40mpg+ is the norm. I hit 50mpg once! The mild-hybrid tech does all sorts of clever stuff behind the scenes to make that happen.

No regrets and highly recommend. MY23 D350 HSE

Thank you! I’ve 3 x TDV8 , a 3.6 and 2 x 4.4 , I’ve heard good things about the D350, but have a yearning for V8 petrol , but not sure if the fuel bill is worth it…. The D350 seems the sensible option.

I also had a 3.6 and 4.4 TDV8’s, the D350 is definitely the best. Even locally I get 30mpg. To add I drive enthusiastically when not in traffic.

I owned a 4.2 supercharged too but the number of visits to the petrol station was a pain. The D350 achieves 600+ from a tank.

I owned the L405 in 4.4 v8 diesel, 5.0 v8 petrol and 5.0 v8 petrol SV AB dynamic flavours, and have now done 20k miles in my 2022 L460 d350 LWB AB. The d350 is in my opinion the best of the lot - silky smooth, plenty powerful enough and frugal too. Family members who drive my car agree. The 4.4 v8 diesel was my favourite L405 engine (I drove the v6 diesel too so tried most of the range) but the d350 L460 is even better.

It depends on your driving profile.

Do you do a lot of short trips or long journeys? Are they in the city or rural? Do you tow often?

Like 'Freddy Bear' says, the new D350 is very good, and so is the D300. I didn't find as big a jump between the L460 D300 and D350 as there is with the L405 V6 and V8.

Short journeys, city driving, tax savings, solar with batteries and the ability to home charge put up a good argument for the P460e/550e. 2024 P550e Autobiography

The real main advantage driving hybrid is for company car users.

Fuel savings, subject to filling up, are irrelevant at this price point.

Agreed. Plus you are lugging around 200kg-300kg in batteries which can't help with the driving dynamics. And on a long run you are subject to a 4 pot engine and the resulting worse economy/lesser engine refinement compared to the non-plug-in options. MY23 D350 HSE

6 cylinder now and the p550e must be quick. I don't know if braking is upgraded?

I moved from a 2016 4.4 diesel to the D300 L460. Frugal, smooth, quiet and huge amounts of punch. I was very very unsure about the 3 litre let alone the D300 untill the dealer told me to test drive the car complete with all of its sticky tape still attached from the factory. Impressive. So diesel yes, petrol no.

These cars are mild hybrid which gets them up to 2 or 3 mph, (I’m not quite sure) , it’s. Sh off a shovel as the diesel then takes over. Very clever. Test drive them both & petrol, the dealer should be willing. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

I don't disagree, but HMRC treats the hybrids more favourably as company cars.

Short trips don't suit the diesel IMO.

I have to say, I am petrol through and through (maybe even hydrogen if it ever comes!) and always will be (call me a dinosaur!)....

So for me diesel's hold zero appeal, be interesting to see if the D300 and D350 and small over tuned Petrol ingenium engines suffer the same fate of the previous ingenium engines once they have a few miles on them. (especially when twined with electric gismos! and JLR priceless reliability and customer service)

Tuned small engines are in my view a weak spot of any large car, no different to what we see across the board, turning that much power out of a small block with all that weight will undoubtedly leave someone with a huge problem one day.

So enjoy it whilst its new and change it before it runs out of warranty and leave the problems for the next man!

(oh and by the way, that mantra just devalues the brand as the market gets flooded with cars, people shift before they become a problem).

Its a free world and that just my opinion, so am ready to be shot down by the oil burning brigade Thumbs Up

Germany 2019 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Corris Grey

My ranking for an actual RR Drivetrain:

1. V8 (for decent fun)
2. P550e (for smooth and quiet ride with power..
3. D300/350 (delivers smooth torque and is unbeatable economic)
4. P400 (smooth and refined petrol with enough power)

I would take all of them, as the L460 is in every configuration a great Range Rover to own.
I don’t want to talk about engine reliability, as nowadays the surrounding of tech is for me the same risk for longevity of a car.

Take what you want and don’t care about years ahead! ☺️ RR Classic 1998-2005
