My oil dilution service countdown started the other day in the Incontrol app, under 1800 miles to run, which really means in the next 200 miles or so.

Imagine my surprise when a woman from the local dealership called me out of the blue, "you need a service Sir, Incontrol app has indicated this"!!!

So it looks like they are drumming up business, never had a call before in the past 4 -1/2 years with it having 3-4 oil services per year! 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

I've been experiencing a similar issue with the service countdown oddity. It was fine up until a software update in around 2019. I never managed to get to the bottom of it despite numerous visits to the dealer.

My car was serviced in December 23 and was then off the road between January and June due to a parts issue.

Around August the dash indicated it was due a service??? So I did a reset (bonnet open, brake/accelerator press) as the car had only driven a couple of thousand miles at most.

I px'd the car in September and is presently for sale "in trade". When I handed the car over I noticed the dash indicated around 1800 miles remaining before its next service. The InControl subscription is still in my name until December, waiting to be transferred to its new owner.

Over the last couple of weeks, my local dealership has called me at least twice offering to book my car in for service. I did wonder why such an early call as its annual service isn't due until December/January but never enquired as the call ended when I told them the car had been sold. 2024 P550e Autobiography

Isn't there a potential GDPR issue with this if they are indeed monitoring InControl? When setting up mu InControl I dont recall seeing anywhere that it said I was happy to grant access to the dealership?  _______________________________________________

I think it’s a sign of the economy. They’ve had a few years of not having to work for anything, it’s all been too easy - now times are tighter they are having to do a days work.

When I got done for speeding a few years back, I asked my contact at the dealer if it was possible to download the detailed telemetery for the time of the offence on the speed camera to see what speed the car was doing. He told me in theory it was possible, but wasn’t sure of the protocol. I didn’t pursue it, but I might if I ever get caught again!

Funny enough there was one of these “Police caught on camera blah blah” type programmes a few years ago which looked at the investigation into the incident described here;

I recall the police eventually got the telemetry from JLR (off the actual module though) after much back and forth which ended up proving beyond any doubt of the vehicles speed at the time of the impact etc.

Can’t remember all the details but even for the police it seemed a rather taxing and complicated process.

Having said all that I think it was a much older L322 (maybe a later version) so the modules where probably more difficult to get data from.

I'm in the mobile comms industry and you'd be surprised about what is tracking you on an ongoing basis.

But for cars it's been recent big upshift in the last couple of years due to new EU laws, i.e. a new car will know instantly you pass a speed sign, by both video and position, it knows instantly if you break a speed limit, it even has the ability to predict you are approaching an upcoming bend or school too quickly.

The only reason we are not being done for it is that it requires a court order to view that data, and that has to have probable cause, i.e. they have to have evidence or reasonable suspicion you have committed a specific crime or the data is pertinant to a criminal investigation, and the person accessing it can only act on it in the capacity of that court order. i.e. if they are investigating a car accident, they cannot go back through your history, only the part relevant to the incident under the court order, typically the last minute prior to the accident.

The lady you mention can access the tracking data on the dealer's cars and they can do that, not necessarily via the car itself, but perhaps a tracker they have in the car. But they are not permitted to access that kind of positioning or tracking data from a Customer's car. If they do they are breaking the law.

Modern cars, mobile phones, PTT devices, tablets, internet capable dashcams & Sat Navs, smart watches, smart speakers, tags and a whole host of other products, pretty much anything connected to the internet is tracking you constantly.

Not surprised at all by this Andy. And I suspect it's likely to form the basis of future road charging tolls on a pay per mile basis (or be used to limit vehicle movement, perhaps with a personal geofence, if you've created too many emissions).

Probably doesn't make any difference but my vehicle journey tracking is turned off within the app.
