Ok, it’s time to get off the 20’s and onto 18” wheels and tyres.

My 2010 has the 6 pots, so smallest wheel that will fit is late model / factory 19’s, problem there, awful tyre choice of AT’s in that size and getting said wheels.

There have been a few people who have taken a grinder to the 6 pots and shoe horned a set of Compomotive wheels, with 30mm spacers to over the calipers. TBH, just because it can be done, doesn’t mean it should. And why wreck a decent set of calipers too.

The gaps after the grinding are into the single digit MM’s and all it will take is for a stone to get trapped… well, we know about Sod’s Law.

I’ve seen people put 6 pots on a car made for 4 pots, and going to 20’s, the only difference I can see with going up or down is the hub carrier assemble built to take the caliper bolt sizing pattern to the hub carrier.

As 6 pots have the massive 380MM calipers, 4 pots are 360MM, a replacement 06-09 hub carrier assemble is what’s required, along with smaller 4 pots, pads, discs, etc. Easily available.

Ok brain trust, what am I missing here and why can’t this be done.

4 pots were used on the 4.2 sc, so can clearly handle the stopping power.

Brake master / servo. would be ok, wheel speed / ABS sensor, pad wear sensor connections, all the same, tyre diameter might need an adjust on the gap tool, but that should not be a problem

And yes, all parts that come off, will go on sale, calipers, discs, carrier hubs. As well as 20” wheels and tyres too.

If you use 4 pots from a Range Rover Sport, you don't need to change hubs etc

Alternatively, if you don't care about Brembos, you can fit the calipers + carriers from a D4 or Facelift RRS/L322, again without replacing hubs

Thanks for that… so, 360MM discs and calipers from RRS fit, I thought they were the same calipers that were fitted to the TDv6 L322, or are they TRW?

Did they fit different 4 pot calipers, or are they all the same size across RRS/L322 TDV6, 4.2SC?

You need to use 360mm discs for L322, but calipers and carriers are interchangeable from Facelift L320 + D4 to Facelift L322

Calipers/Carriers from an L405/494 may also fit, but ive not checked part numbers to see...

Did you check out the Insurance ramifications of the conversion to smaller brakes?

You may also need to consider the rear disc diameter in the equation, to preserve front/rear brake balance ideally the front to rear diameter ratio needs to remain the same.

An abundance of caution is required when doing any brake modifications….. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I considered this change but opted for D4 19" rims fitted with GG AT 255/60R19 (LI 113) tyres and I'm very happy with the package. I'm a farmer and often have to drive very boggy tracks and lanes where these tyres perform very well yet they also perform very well on wet and dry sealed surfaces at speed.
I had previously fitted 2 different makes of 275/55R20 to the original rims but they changed the handling and the gearing for towing my caravan too much. 255/60R19 have the same sidewall height as 275/55R20 and their stronger carcase than 255/50R20 and 255/55R20 sizes (LI 110) makes them much more suitable for the rocks that I also encounter both in daily driving and for outback touring, yet still provide an acceptable ride compared with LT tyres.

I found a tyre shop that imported other GG AT sizes that the normal importer didn't so I asked if they would import this size, which they did so I bought 6. I then purchased 2 sets of 4 discarded D4 19" rims of a pattern similar to the orginal 20" rims. The rims are still 8" wide so don't increase sidewall vulnerability and they clear the calipers by a few mm but outside weights must not be stacked. The offset is only 3mm less positive so have no impact on steering geometry. I urge you to consider this package.

I had previously downsized my 3.0 D4's brakes to those from the 2.7 because no decent 19" tyres were available at the time. I had placed an order for the Compomotve 18" rims but cancelled the order when I found that 18" tyre options were very few. Hence I was prepared to replace the 6-pots with the NA 5.0 L322 brakes, allowed here as an owner-certified modification due to the NA 5.0 producing more power but the 4-pots wouldn't have been legal because they weren't fitted to any MY10-12 L322. However I wanted to exhaust all other options first. Pirelli listed a product code for the AT+ in 255/60R19 LI 113 but then didn't proceed with production. Fortunately for me, GG then released their AT3 in that size, being the D5 19" size and also usable on the L494 and L405.
