The 405 has electric power steering, thus no fluid reservoir

Was it the ARC fluid reservoir you've checked?

That reservoir is for the dynamic response active cornering system which contains a hydraulic pump, valveblock, anti-roll bars ... and pipework.

Ordinarily, it shouldn't lose any fluid, and if it does, then the most likely culprit of the loss is corrosion of the pipework, leading to leaks.
That being said, it may just simply be low and needing topped up. Generally, cold climate PAS fluid is what you need. I listed out a few of the common variations near the top of this thread:

https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic65671.html

I think I would top it up first and monitor it. Would also be worth looking on the underside for any wet patches where the pipe work runs. ( For the rear, it runs from underneath the LHS front seat, down the LHS sill and up and over the rear subframe/diff area ).

If you find patches, or it continues to drop ... then start reading the threads about ACE pipes. Whistle V8 or else ...

Thanks mate for the very comprehensive response. I'll top up first as you suggest and go from there with my fingers crossed. I only noticed it when I was under the bonnet for something else, its lower than minimum. For a top up I imagine 1L will do? Geoff

Yeah, if there is fluid in the reservoir and you're just topping it up, 1 litre would be plenty I would have thought. V8 or else ...

Yes. The reservoir holds about 300 ml. The entire system holds about 3 l.

I'm sure it's 2l. that is what I bought from the LR dealership (on their advice) to do a reservoir/filter replacement and oil change and I used just under the 2l. Often overlooked because it can get a bit messy the reservoirs that contain the filter (from 2015 I think) are supposed to be changed every 5 years or 60,000 miles according to the service manager at the local stealership.
