Airbox removal

I want to change the bulb in the drivers side headlight. The book says take it to a dealer but I read on here the only complication is that you need to remove the airbox to get access. Is that pretty straightforward and is there anything else I need to be aware of? It’s a nice day up here so I might give it a try if it’s simple, i ask because my DIY skills are not the best Rolling with laughter Geoff

It's straightforward to remove the air cleaner. A couple of hose clamps, remove the hose. An electrical connector, and a pipe. Then with a little wiggle it lifts out.

Air box is easy to remove Geoff, just the MAF sensor wire and the air hose clip then it literally pulls up and out as it only clips in so to speak. It’s easier if you take the triangle shaped trim off (4 turn clips ) and lift the rubber bonnet seal out of the way too, just gives you more room. Re-fitting is just the reverse as you’ll see the pegs it locates on once out.
Just also be aware the headlights are very high voltage and can give you a nasty nip so make sure they are switched off before you start Thumbs Up

Mmmmm. It won’t just lift out because of the two locators it has sticking into sockets on the inner wing is it just a case of brute force (and it will need a lot of it) or is there a knack? Geoff

If I remember correctly, release it upwards to get it out of the bottom socket things ( may take a fair old tug to get it to release ), and then the engine side of the box needs to come upwards first, which once its done that, it then allows you to withdraw the lugs out of the wing side.

It could be held in pretty firmly by those sockets, so it needs a proper waggle to get it released and out. V8 or else ...

Thanks guys got to the back of the bulb but it won’t come out so what to do next, does it just pull? I’m only two hours in to this job and already have skinned all my knuckles. So just have to get the bulb out and put it all back together. Geoff

If you put some rubber or silicone grease on the stub or rubber socket it makes removal next time a bit easier.
They can need a bit of a tug to get them out. 2012 TDV8 4.4 Westminster Santorini black

Don't give up, you can do it!

The bulbs rotate and lock into place similar to the amount a household bayonet bulb will rotate in to lock. So to release, you'd be turning the top face from 12 o'clock anticlockwise to about 10 o'clock.

They can be very stiff to rotate in either direction of unlocking or locking. I even think I may have even used wide pliers or similar to grip onto to the large square box and twist. V8 or else ...

Don't take it to the Stealers, they'll just break something else!

Here's the Topix link to bulb removal and replacement:-

Thanks to all for your help and encouragement, had to cease operation and put everything back together yesterday (prior appointment in pub). Although I don’t relish the thought of getting the airbox back out again (it fouled on just about every wiring loom) I’ve done it once so I can do it again the Topix pages were extremely helpful because they showed the lockring. As no one else had mentioned it I thought the bulb would just slide out backwards - not the case. So armed with that extra bit of knowledge and the fact that I have no pub visits planned (so have all day) I have my fingers crossed for a better outcome. Geoff
