ZF 8HP70 Resistance issue

Hi all, hope you’re well

I have an issue on my 2012 Westie. A few weeks ago I noticed some resistance coming from the car when letting off accelerator. The car drops speed noticeably when letting off and I’ve narrowed it down to gearbox as if I repeat the test and flick into neutral the car rolls along nicely how it used to.

There’s no dash errors coming up but I plugged in the diag and only gearbox related code is P0814-01 transmission range display malfunction. I can clear the code and gearbox goes back to normal for anywhere from 1-100 miles before I get the resistance again.

Gear changes, moving between N, D, S etc are all silky smooth as usual. HDC, all the different gearbox features work as they should and as I say, I don’t get a dash error. It’s one of those things you only notice as you notice any minor change on your own motor. Mrs can’t feel anything different but there certainly is summat off!

I thought perhaps the TCM has gone but I’m under the assumption that’s a red dash error and will limp mode the car.

Any ideas folks?
Thank you!

Land Rover’s helpful advice is to “suspect transmission shift module” & “check & install new transmission shift module as required”. They don’t happen to mention the £1,250 cost for a new unit.

Does the overrun braking that you experience feel like when you select Sport Mode and the torque converter lock-up clutch is applied during overrun, or is the retardation more severe than that?

Hi Phil
Thanks for getting back to me. It’s more severe than when in Sport.

The PRNDS LED’s are fine and function as they should.

If it is the actual shift module, I believe that’s the mechatronic unit on the 2012 which is a 3k part and inside the gearbox Big Cry

On a side not is that a publically available document you screenshot the error code on? That looks more useful than anything I’ve found on google
Thanks

My £1,250 figure came from Sussex Autos, who are an official ZF parts supplier.

The 2010-2012 workshop manuals are in the Wiki section.
