Crankshaft pulley out of alignment

After a few years without a Fullfattrr I bought a very nice 2011 5.0SC with about 145000 km last winter.

Timing chains where renewed by the specialist who sold me the car and it drove without problems. Last month my local LR specialist noticed that the crankshaft pulley was out of alignment and that the auxiliary belt was "eaten" slowly. They could not diagnose this problem without some major surgery so I asked the seller if they had any idea because they maybe did something wrong while changing the timing chains.

Now they want to solve the problem by changing the crankshaft bolt by a LR011952 bolt. My technical knowledge about these things is very limited. Any ideas about this bolt changing solution?

Are you sure it is the crankshaft pully? In my opinion a bolt doesnt do anything with alignment, and if it were loose the pully would be movable. Could be another pully as well, maybe the shaft of the waterpump?

Hi, I doubt it's the crankshaft pulley, that would take quite a whack to move that and as pointed out, changing the bolt would not impact that.

I'd suggest looking at the other pulleys first, if they've had one off for some reason and put it back on crooked by leaving some crud on the mating surfaces that would do it.

May just be the parallax but it looks to me from the picture that the fan pulley looks like its tilted forwards at the top, that may be causing your problem.

The tensioner is usually the one that gets out of alignment due to wear in its pivot.

that bottom pully looks like its not mounted square or the shaft is broken RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Some news: the mechanic can see that the crankshaft pulley is not quite right. They can do two things:

1. install a new crankshaft pulley. The cost of this is €366.14. However, they cannot say with certainty that this will solve the problem, since there is currently an original part on it.
2. They can also install a different belt with one tooth less. This means that it will no longer be affected by the pulley.

Option 2 does not feel right for me. Any ideas about option 1? 2011 RR 5.0 SC & 2021 New Defender D300

I wonder how a fixed pully can get out of allignment. There must have been some violent force to do that imo.

And for the second option, the belt would also be eaten, maybe slower, but still.

Did he notice the crankpully out of allignment with engine running?

Wouldn't it be best to get a straight edge and see which one is out of alignment. Does one wobble with the engine running?

It's not uncommon for crankshaft pulleys to be rubber decoupled with the outer drive ring and the inner shaft seperated by rubber. If the rubber deteriorates it can cause the outer ring to run eccentricly. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

The crankshaft pulley uses a special tool to pull it off the crank and when refitting the tool is reversed and the pulley is pushed onto the crankshaft.

I wonder if they've not pushed it back onto the crankshaft far enough using the special tools.

However, that bolt is TIGHT. The official figures are 200nm plus a further 270 degrees. When I did mine it was locked using the official tools and I was using a 5 foot 3/4" breaker car to tighten it. I would have thought with it being that tight it might have seated the pulley properly if it wasn't done so with the proper tools.

Before you start buying a new pulley I would remove the old one and have a proper look at it and refit it properly to see if it lines up any better.

If the pulley is out of alignment or is moving enough to cause the belt to be damaged then the outer section must have moved due to the rubber deteriorating and therefore a new pulley should be fitted. If not replaced then the movement will get worse.

Fitting is achieved using a bolt such as the old bolt with the thick spacer removed. Note that there is a thin washer between the end of the crankshaft and the inside of the pulley which gets bent to a D shape during fitting as the crankshaft has a flat to ensure that the pulley can't rotate on the shaft. Whilst I purchased a new washer, the old one was firmly wedged into the pulley so I didn't change it when I R&R'd mine's pulley.

Thanks for all the info and thoughts! The pulley is not wobbling wenn the engine is running.

I think I will let them put on a new pulley with special attention to the fitting. 2011 RR 5.0 SC & 2021 New Defender D300

If you do, just replace the waterpump as well, and double check all idlers and tensioners. I seriously doubt the problem is the crankshaft pully.
