Diesel on the driveway... | |
Chaps,
I have searched the forum extensively on this and whilst enormously helpful, I don't yet have quite enough to get me over the line.
Discovered a fuel leak the other day. I say "discovered" - what I really mean is it made itself apparent.
It was bad - really really bad.
Traced to the water sensor connection at the base of the fuel filter, just turning on the ignition (not starting the engine) was sufficient to unleash a torrent. Identifying the sealing washer inside that connection as having failed, flexing between thumb and forefinger showed significant perishing of the synthetic rubber.

Fortunately my Indy had one lying around. And this did resolve the problem - sort of.
No longer a flood of biblical proportions, but it's still not right. Not obviously leaking with the engine idling, but a quick run round the block results in a puddle on the drive upon return.
On checking with Duckworths this morning I find that Land Rover don't sell the washers separately. You don't even get one with a new filter. It is however included as part of a replacement filter housing kit. Mmm yeah...
So my question is this - the existing washer and the replacement acquired are of a non standard lobed design with 3 evenly spaced "cut aways" to the internal diameter - see photo. Are these critical, or are they as I fear they may be, contributing to the problem ? In which case this might not be the correct washer. And I should presumably source an appropriately sized viton/nitrile replacement of more conventional design ?
