So long as you use a data only SIM it is useful for getting live real time travel / news / weather updates, can turn your car into a wifi hotspot for passengers and a few other things that we probably can all live without or already have via mobile apps but it is cheap to buy a data only SIM so I added one just because I can but dont really use it much. If I remember correctly I bought a data only SIM from Amazon that allowed 24GB of data and was valid for 2 years, cost me £30 I think. Had it in the car 7 months now and only used 133MB of the allowance! _______________________________________________

This is a really good question! I didn’t even know it could be done. I shall look forward to answers as well! |

you can also turn on the satellite view for the nav, it's not as good as google maps version but still better than nothing. Current

I thought the SIMs don’t actually work anymore since the demise of 3G?

I didn't realise that older 405's used 3G, mine is a 2019 which is 4G as far as I know. Didn't think 3G was being phased out across the board yet? _______________________________________________

As has already been said, a Simcard has its uses and I've always bought a "3" data sim from Amazon. Just bought a new one last week

That’s incorrect, they absolutely will work with 2G but it’s dependent on the Networks provision and your network, Three (3), has never had 2G support, it was launched as the UK’s first 3G only network. The other Networks still currently have a 2G fall back provision but this is scheduled to be switched off by 2033 latest, with EE estimating sometime this decide. |

Thanks for the information thats explains my issues, but I suppose all a bit academic when 2G is 30x slower than 3G, itself considered woefully slow these days. Better to connect the vehicle to your 5G phone hotspot instead, and use what you’re already paying for. |

With tethering your phone is there any way to do this without having to go to settings and connectivity with every visit. I appreciate the phone will connect all by its self for telephone functions but to have to go settings>connectivity> phones hot spot is boiling my pi*s. Or would it just be easier to buy a data sim ? 2021 SVautobiography Dynamic Black ( Black wheels need to go ) 1997 C140 Mercedes Benz CL500 |
