I'm slightly confused by Dan_Uk and RRUKs comments. I can turn my radio/cd/dvd on without the key in the ignition (or near it) although cannot adjust the volume as high as normal and my owners manual says it will switch off after 1hr to save the battery,( I can't turn on the rear entertainment screens though). I can also adjust my driver/passanger seats without the key. Maybe this is because the hidden switch is still wired up, I don't know (I raised the original post about the switch by the way).
Cheers

Just realised that Dan's will be the BMW head unit so may function differently to mine.

Sorry for pulling up an ancient thread - just saw this.

Dan, the BMW based units switch on just like the Denso units w/o the key. The next time you're detailing your car, click the volume knob w/o the key. My kids listen to the radio all the time when they're waiting in the car - the older even got about 15 seconds of listening in this morning because she was in the car that long before I was. Drives me nuts.

If yours doesn't switch on, there might be a setting that can be changed. You should have the tools to do that too, tho.

(wife thinks I'm nuts - prob right, too)
