So I’m still hunting for a l405 - looking at a 4.4 sdv8 November 2017 model… now as far as I can tell it’s exactly the same as the January 2018 model… the 2018 model gets the security update but the 2017 doesn’t… is this something you could pay to be updated?

I'm guessing this is a model year thing. The model year change is usually in the late Autumn. It'll be pretty obvious on the 17/18 change as that's the facelift - so if its got all the my18 stuff (lights/seats/screens/etc) then it'll be an MY18 and the update will apply. If its just a late registered MY17 then probably not! Mike - MPx

It has the new infotainment with CarPlay etc but not seats and lights - same as a 67plate 2018… Current stable:

The models will either be pre facelift or post facelift.

The post facelift has different (LED) front lights and different design rear lights, with the interior having new wider seats moving the seat adjusters to the doors. The facelift as I understand it uses the Wideband technology for the keyless entry system, which is being updated at Land Rover, as well as some changes to the module internally to make can injection hacking more difficult.

The registration of date of the car can be misleading - some get registered late as I have seen a couple of pre-facelift 2018 registered cars.

So if it is facelift = Wideband + update
Pre facelift (MY17 has CarPlay + wider screen) then allegedly there will be an update for security, but it will be far down the priority list. Prior to MY16 I believe it is not possible to receive the update.
