Well l405 to replace my l322 which is uk and on 250k miles but drives like a peach will spend about 80k Euros

Well they are very expensive here. I just sold my 2006 4.2 (105k miles) for 12k, sold within a week.

Probably worth 4K in the uk!

Thought as much wondered if it is worth just buying uk and importing don’t have a problem driving rhd even on back roads

What's the import tax like into France?

Duty and tax is basically 32%. Plus the registration fee which for my S/C was 800 odd. But after that fee no road tax.
Now, I showed them a LR invoice for 2k when I imported mine. I cannot confirm or deny that I made that invoice on my laptop, but they accepted it. They will not accept a hand written invoice. So I only paid taxes on 2k. They often value it themselves which would be at the French value 😱
