TDV6 questions — crankshaft pulley

I have a low mile (30k) L405 TDV6. Oil’s been changed religiously by previous owner every 3k-4k since new. I just did a fresh change plus a new fuel filter. I’m doing changes every 5k miles.

My belts are up for replacement due to age (8+ years, a lot of parts seem to be 2015). I was going to do all pulleys and tensioner at same time. Considering doing oil pump and water pump too.

I have a few things that have been concerning. I noticed #2 when trying to find the source for #1.

1. A mechanical hum/whir that’s fairly loud after the car is warm. This is mostly heard at idle and gets quieter when revved up. At higher revs at speed cannot really be heard. Sounds like it might be a pump of some kind. Can hear it more clearly from interior than engine bay. It seemed to possibly be coming from water pump (is there only one?) at front of engine. Unsure if this is normal or sign of a failing part.

2. I noticed when looking at this wound that the crankshaft pulley has a bit of vibration. I found this unusual as the pulleys on my other vehicles are pretty rock solid smooth. I can’t imagine this is normal? Of course the worst fear on these things is crankshaft failure. Is any vibration normal, and if not, what are the chances it’s just the pulley needing refreshing and not something more serious? I would assume that if the crankshaft bearings were causing the vibration there would be more noise and rough driving. The engine does feel pretty smooth and quiet when driving.

Any thoughts appreciated. I will try and get a video uploaded soon as well.

Hi,
#1 I also have a mechanical noise which I can't get at Censored In my case it only occurs under light load and in drive (not present when in P and revving up). This noise is like rattling/ticking but only audible in cabin and no radio on between 1000-1500 rpm. Changed accessorie belt incl water pump, tensioner and pulley. Nothing changed. Noise is more present when motor is warm. Now thinking of something in gearbox/torque converter. I discovered that two of the injectors make ticking noise, but these do this also at idle. Drives me mad....
Hope you find your noise soon. Have you tried to hear it with a stethoscope? Might point you in the direction?
#2 I also have this vibration on the crankshaft pulley. While it is only at the outside I think this can be neglected. Check carefully at the inner side (closest to the center bolt): at idle you can clean the surface up with a piece of sandpaper so you have a good look at it. Be careful doing the sandpaper at idle!! 2013 L405 3.0 TdV6 Autobiography Barolo Black

It’s just Imgur which is a trusted source, possibly the #1 method to share photos and video links. You can copy and paste the link and inspect it if you doubt it.

Also, if your noise is not present in park, def would suggest drivetrain. Maybe worth doing fresh fluids in tranny/TC/diffs?

I did the transferbox double flush (and reset), and also did the gearbox filter and fluid (no full flush, but only the 4 litres that came out; will have to do some more times). Diffs not done yet, but on the list. Coming to an end of ideas and still no progression on that Big Cry Question 2013 L405 3.0 TdV6 Autobiography Barolo Black

Update:

LR speciality shop said pulley was fine. Replaced with a new one for fresh rubber with timing belt change just to be safe.

They couldn’t find source of the idle humming but I’m wondering if it’s this:

Will give it a shot and report back.

Does the new pulley jump about like the original?

A bit less but similar. Think it’s run out (not perfectly round)

Thanks.
The outer balance part is designed to float to compensate for vibrations from the crankshaft and ancilliaries. I wondered to what extent the original rubber had gone soft but perhaps not particularly so.
Many years ago I had a pulley from a Perkins 354.4 engine in aging tractor re-rubbered because the balance part seemed to be jumping about excessively, but when rebuilt it wasn't much better.
