5.0 Supercharged L322 MPG

I'm thinking of coming back to RR ownership with a late L322. I don't do many miles, so I'm thinking a 5.0 would be a more sensible Whistle buy than a 4;4 TDV8.

Am I been unrealistic to hope for 20mpg average ? Any owners out there with real life numbers ?
I'm quite a sensible driver, and travel mainly A roads.

I've seen a few with chains and guides done - Anything special I need to look out for when checking paperwork for these jobs ?

You can still do low miles in a 4.4 - it's just short trips it doesn't like. You will likley find it easier to get a 4.4 in the spec you want and at a lower price as they are more available on the used market. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Switzerland 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Adriatic Blue

I do several trips a year to south spain with a two tonne trailer.
Driving between 110 and 120 Km/h gives me an average of 18.2 MPG.
Not too bad for a close to 5 tonne rig.

To be honest, do also do quite a lot of short trips ..

Overall, got around 21 out of mine - mixed roads but generally not short trips. Would be higher on sensible speed motorway runs but lower if using the performance more or towing. Mike - MPx

Quite possible I think to get an average of 20mpg but depends a lot of the trip profile and how heavy you are on the pedal Rolling with laughter The 5.0 SC can be a tempting beast to exercise the HP. Mine is a 2011 and I guess I'm doing around 17-18 MPG on a long average. I like to use the power where safe to do so and generally make 'progress' when on the motorway. Do a lot of small trips 5-20 miles probably daily and two or three times a month may do a long run 110-130 miles each way. On the long runs even with pushing it I think I can get 23-25 MPG and if I push it less I've managed 28 MPG. Around town its going to be much less but I never check that for sanity Very Happy

One tip if you get one is always keep the tank topped up. I find it helps with the experience. I generally try and top it up when I see the guage around half full. As these beasts have a 100L tank it can get a bit scary at the pumps if you are down to a 1/4 tank or less! ----------- Current Garage --------------------

This is getting more and more tempting...

How real / common are the cam chain issues ?

I currently have a D3 HSE and a SLK 55 AMG, so I figured the L322 5.0 would be a good combination of both Thumbs Up

I bought my s/c in May 2018 with around 70k miles - I was well aware of the timing chain issues and looking out for it - early 2020 I started getting some unusual clicking noises from the engine. Had it checked out by local main dealer and they diagnosed timing chain guide issue and a bearing in the supercharger going. Probably could have hunted around and got an indy to do it cheaper but bit the bullet and coughed up around 4.5k for both to be repaired by MD.

I've probably spent between £800-£1,500 per year on it at annual service / MOT time for age related repairs and consumables but I think this would be the case with oil burners as well. That's just older Range Rover ownership.

Im now on 111k miles and can honestly say despite the repair bills has never let me down or stranded me. A/C is playing up at the moment so probably another bill there soon. But love it every time I drive it.

Looking at upgrading to a L405 in the next 6 months if all goes well but also considering keeping to L322 as well as I love it so much. ----------- Current Garage --------------------

Bought mine at around 60k miles. Chains went at around 108k. Found that not many indies wanted the job and struggled to get help - (that was the start of 2021 so maybe other factors). Potential huge bill (local MD quoted £8k), but the real killer for me was timing as I needed to keep using the car, so bought the SVA instead. I average 17-18mpg from mine. I do like to exercise it occasionally once it's warmed up though Smile

Mine is a 2012 that I bought last year on 114k. I bought it needing the timing chains doing. I did the chains, tensioners, guides, VVT variators, supercharger rebuild and a load of plastic cooling system parts. Everything was done using genuine LR parts other than the supercharger rebuild which was done by Powerhouse Automotive.

The supercharger rebuild was the only thing I had done, everything else I did myself and my parts total came to £4.5k.

They are a fantastic car though Smile

I did 650 miles in a day in our 4.4 TDV8 the other day and it feels pedestrian in comparison. I do like the 8 speed gearbox on the diesel though.

Ireland 2009 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Barolo Black

2009 5L SC @ 78k miles. My best has been 24.8mpg, but usually it’s around 22-23mpg. However, I only really use it for longer trips, so motorways here in Ireland and same after ferry to UK. In saying that, I’d did good mpg on smaller roads around North Wales too. I rarely break 100km/h and rarely accelerate hard. I’ll switch off cruise control and use a light foot if I feel it’s getting a bit thirsting in cruise control.

I do quite a few short tips in my 4.4
Couple of miles there and back to my local supermarket / shops
Some weeks longest run it gets is 15 miles
No issues for me

In my view the 4.4s like to be used…regularly
Don’t park ‘em up just for long runs
My 4.4 is my daily and only runabout

Ive only had my 5.0 for 3 weeks but on a recent 240 mile trip to wales with the cruise set at 72 for most of the journey it returned 25.8 running on 99 octane Esso. I was happy with that.
