I think the OP has come out of it quite well. It was overpriced IMO. In any case, any used car at this age will likely be in need of some consumables.

Hi all

I am looking for another L322. I can’t find a ‘for sale’ section in the menu so could someone direct me to where I might see them?

Glad my post was of such interest, and thanks once again for the various bits of advice.

For my part the takeaway was ‘don’t expect too much from a (other than LR) dealer’ and ‘ you probably paid too much even if the car was fundamentally sound’ so that’s two lessons learnt.

Just to be clear, as someone with very little mechanical skills what I am looking for is a well maintained car which at point of sale has no obvious faults. I completely understand that it may well develop faults the minute I drive it away, and some (most) will be expensive to fix. No problem whatsoever with that, life is a series of calculated risks. The thing that threw me with my original purchase was the existing faults which were clear and obvious and therefore I felt should have been resolved before the car was sold. I have no further expectation beyond that.

Don't feel like you've made a bad choice on it, we've probably all bought cars that you end up regretting (I certainly have) but I think the biggest thing to understand about a second hand car is that regardless of who you buy it from there are some truths that you have to accept;

- If buying from a trader then you are afforded a certain level of protection against something that is not disclosed at the point of sale and makes the car unsuitable for its intended use, you could consider MOT failure type items in this I would suggest.
- If buying privately then it is certainly a case of buyer beware but you can therefore reasonably expect to make a financial saving Vs a sale through a garage.
- Cars of this age will always need looking after, pretty constantly in some cases.

To give some perspective I have a 2007 TDV8 as a daily driver, its done 40,000 miles in the last 2 years, in that time I've probably spent £6k on maintenance and repairs, including a £3k gearbox rebuild (its now on 210k miles) plus numerous suspension parts, brakes, coolant issue, etc etc - many of these jobs I've done myself and yet its still cost the equivalent of an lease car each year to look after.

I still wouldn't be without it though, they are great vehicles, but they do need love.

Just to add to earlier comments. I do of course expect ongoing costs up to and including replacing every last nut and bolt on the car. No problem with that, to be expected on any car and particularly on a12-14 year old complex beast like a RR.

As an earlier post suggested, it’s about budgeting for unknowns. I just like to know at what point I am jumping in!

I think at this age and mileage, you'll need to expect that any L322 will need work or maintenance in the upcoming 12 months. Otherwise you need to spend £120k buying a brand new Range Rover.

To your point about "how much" and jumping in, the fact is anything can go wrong with any used vehicle. To exemplify this, the 4.4 TDV8 had a known issue with the PCV on the air con compressor. This isn't mileage related and can fail at any time. Because it's 7 hours labour, the garage bill is over £1,000. The fact is, you need to expect these things on an old complex 4x4 (not just Land Rover). The complex mechanicals and packed engine bays mean labour can be 3x that of an equivalent repair on a typical saloon or estate car, and there are significantly more components to go wrong.

Sounds like your best bet based on your needs and requirements is to purchase one from a Land Rover specialist. But, you are best regardless, to put a couple of hundred away each month for maintenance and repairs. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

At least you have chosen the most reliable model with no items that commonly have catastrophic failure reputations - it took 10 yearsf or JLR to give it a reliable engine and gearbox. Prices for buying are sensible now so you jut need to find one in your budget and (IMO) keep at least £3k per year as a contingency fund. Everything else is up to you as how long do you intend to keep it? how many miles do you do a year? is it going to be a daily driver you rely on for essential travel or a 2nd weekend car? How much work are you prepared / able to DIY? Do you want a show car or a running repair project? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks all.

I budget £500 a month to run any car, so that should cover most eventualities.

Usage will be maybe 10K a year, mostly commuting on motorways. No plans to tow or off-road other than the odd rough pub car park….I intend to keep it until I retire in maybe 5 years time. I will maintain it thoroughly and pass it to my son when I am finished with it. All but the simplest repairs will be done by a RR specialist locally. Not looking for a show car, it will only frustrate me when I scratch it.
