Tow Assist - has anyone had it working properly?

I should start by saying that this post is about my experience with “‘tow assist” and not its successor “advanced tow assist” which I think came in around 2017/8.

I think I’ve found the singularly worst section of the owner’s manual for my model year and Land Rover really ought to be ashamed of themselves for letting it go into print. To say it’s sketchy is a generous understatement.

Anyway I’ve pieced together various bits of information from other places most especially on the badly-underdescribed calibration procedure. Did you know that to calibrate, it’s recommended to drive in a straight line at less than 15mph? You’d never have known that from reading the book!

I’ve seen various references to tow assist on this forum - mentions of the funky 3-dot stickers, references to axle configuration etc etc. However, I’ve not come across any reference to anyone that’s actually got it working and whether it’s helpful in real life towing situations.

Would be really interested to hear any thoughts / experiences. 2016 SDV8 AB

Worked one time...

I have advanced tow assist on my 2019 HSE. I played with it several times with my boat trailer. Aaaargh...Had to fiddle with getting a place to mount the triclops sign, calibrate it in reverse as you point out...... The whole thing was a complete PITA It worked one time successfully. I could never duplicate the effort. Sold the boat and don't need the option now.

Had Tow Assist on last RR tried setting it up but it was such a faff. Could not see any advantage to using my eyes and experience.
Advanced tow assist on my current car never gets used.
When I connect the van and get the 'A trailer attached' message I touch ignore and get on my way.
Fantastic tow car to 2500kg caravan, rear camera excellent for hitching up and cruise control makes long journeys a treat.
That's my Tow Assist. 2008 Vogue Black - gone

Land Rovers owners handbooks are totally unless the videos keep asking me to log in to use them but I cannot find where to log on to view them a waste of time

Been searching for a good review of Tow Assist 1 but can’t find one that shows someone reversing a caravan using the lines. For example, I wanted to see if it would make it easier to reverse into a pitch. I haven’t set it up as I don’t have the sticker (yet) but it’s a PITA having to hook up the van and play about with it without looking like an idiot. I mean, where do you go to practice. I’ve managed fine for the last ten years on my own judgement, maybe coming in and out of the pitch a couple of times and then doing the rest with the mover but want to be able to get it right in first attempt, or second. tow Assist 2 looks like it will be much better though.

Spent ages once putting in all the measurements and settings just to try it out of interest, got to the end and it asked for the sticker (which I'd forgotten you need) so all a bit of a wasted exercise really.

Nothing more satisfying than manually reversing a long TA caravan precisely onto a pitch using the mirrors anyway, especially using the HGV palm-on-the-steering-wheel method Laughing ... With everyone watching form their caravans Laughing FFRR SDV8 Autobiography

I put the (official JLR) sticker on my trailer but found the system could not locate it due to it being too close.... I have not printed it smaller to see if that makes any difference.
In the mean time, I have been using the mirrors and palming technique mentioned above (but it would be nice if the technology worked - even if it was just the once!)
