I don't want to start a debate but as regular users will have noticed I sing the praises, and in fact use, cheap Tesco Diesel. Having read a few threads on here about the benefits of premium diesel I thought it would be interesting to try a few tankfuls. So I did, fuel economy is no different as far as I can tell but the car seems to run better, pick up quicker etc. As I say it just an observation and it may just be observers bias. It's convenient to get my fuel from Tesco and I don't recall ever having anything to complain about but the Shell V Power might just be better, obviously it should be as it costs a tenner a tank full more and I'm certainly not getting any of that back through better fuel economy as far as I can tell.

Have a watch of this. The most scientific test I have ever seen comparing different grades of Diesel.

A very interesting watch. I have used Tesco diesel for many years and different cars,never had any issues. However Tesco is very convenient for me also but I do drive a little further and use Costco as it’s a premium diesel and slightly cheaper than even Tesco prices. But now I may switch back decisions decisions 2016 4.4 diesel

I’ve said it before, but my previous trusted independent was a 4.4 tdV8 owner who had a lot of experience and knowledge and was always happy to talk about lessons he had learned.
He showed me six fuel injectors he had just had to change in a 4.4 tdV8 L405.
His words were “false economy “ running on cheap derv, very expensive repair when they fail.
Either use premium fuel or put extra additives in when you fill up.

Like I said I didn't want to start a debate because it's always futile. I know there are strong feelings and thoughts and proofs and experts and know alls ......... Hell I even argue with my Brother in Law he swears by V-Power and wont go near Tesco (actually in his case it would be Sainsbury's as it nearer to him). He actually gives me the impression he'd rather walk than put supermarket fuel (in his Freelander). It certainly has made no difference to me fuel economy wise. On the other hand I know a guy who runs his Taxi on chip fat with no problems other than the awful stink it makes.  Geoff

All I know is that in nearly 2M miles of using premium diesel I have never had any fuel system issues (& since they removed sulphur from diesel used two-stroke) & will continue to do so.

The people I know who use supermarket diesel have very different experiences.

Please tell us, how much 2 stroke oil to a tank full of diesel ?.

The equivalent of around half a cup a full tank.

I was always a cheapest diesel I could source guy and carried a fuel treatment additive that I administered every tankful religiously.

Then our VW Caravelle threw up an EML light that on investigation was logged as an EGR fault. I switched to vPower in the hope that it might do something magical and after a tankful of the wonder-juice, the EML light was extinguished and the fault no longer present.

Almost 4 years later, the same EGR system is still in situ and hasn't triggered any further EML conditions during that time. I also watched the Darkside YouTube video and noted their policy of racing on the cheapest fuel they can source but whilst tempted to revert to supermarket fuel, the thought of having to change the EGR value (which I have even sourced), keeps me paying the significant premium vPower attracts.

Maybe it's madness and marketing hype, but it definitely resolved an EGR system fault in our case so I will continue to pay the premium. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDv8

I used 2 stroke oil in my 200tdi and then 300tdi Defender for years and they ran much smoother and quieter. The 2 stroke added the lubrication back into the diesel that had been lost with ultra low sulphur diesel. It seemed to help the injectors and high pressure fuel pump in particular.

I added it at a ratio of 1:200. So about 400ml of 2 stroke to a full tank.

The issue is using 2 stroke where there is a DPF present as it will potentially cause problems with additional ash deposits. You need to ensure you are using low ash 2 stroke oil to prevent this.

I haven’t used 2 stroke in the TDV6 but I do use BP Ultimate. Apparently Shell V Power has better lubrication additives whereas BP Ultimate has better detergents.

I use Power exclusively, unless not available. Additives that clean are great, but it's the cetane I like. Far, far, far less tractor noises!

Was caught short in Cornwall before return journey so used a supermarket fuel - mpg was basically the same and no problems obviously, but the noise at low speed drives me mad.

I try to use V Power in both cars, petrol mini JCW and the diesel FFRR. I have a Shell loyalty card so get about £3 off every 8 tankfulls (used to be every 5…) so that takes the edge off the price premium. I also don’t do big mileage, so the cost doesn’t hit me in the pocket as much as for those who fill more than once a fortnight like me.

I’ve never had issues with EGR valves or misfires, but I do notice a lack of pull and a rougher idle when cheap supermarket diesel goes in.
