Tinted number plates.... Illegal of course.

Newspaper article today saying thousands of cars have tinted plates to avoid ANPR and all its ongoing uses.
Off course strictly illegal.
But does if work, or just a scam ? 2013 SDV8 4.4 SE Luxor.
1960 Series 2 88 inch diesel.
1955 Series 1 86 inch petrol.

totally illegal to have these..

a tinted film is applied over the plate and makes it difficult but not impossible for ANPR cameras to read the registration.. ... - .- -.

I'd imagine that there's a broad range of ANPR machines of varying quality. Factor in things like light levels, angles etc and there can't be a clear cut answer.....

I'd expect most machines to be able to read better than a person could though.

Seem to be loved by Audi and VW owners and it amazes me when I see a police car pass such cars without pulling them over. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Quite simply a comment on vanity plates in general - was not aimed at anyone in particular.

Apparently the tinted plates can be defeated by the camera operator just turning the contrast up.

I'm astonished how common these seem to be - without any apparent consequences.

Whilst I understand the possible "advantage" of evading cameras, not sure I could like with the horrible look of them!!

The lack of apparent consequences is probably due to the fact that there are actually very few cops who are out there looking at traffic offences, despite the Daily Maul peddling the line that all cops do is go for the easy to prosecute motorists. What will happen though is that any plates that cant be read automatically go through to a manual unit where a civilian member of staff looks and determines what the plate is. There are various other techniques that can be applied to read around the defeat attempts. In the big scheme of things, only a few cops will be interested in this kind of stuff and will ficus on 'real' crime, there will be some civilian staff that will look and enforce this type of stuff, some of it back office and away from the public gaze.

One of my friends processes and prosecutes dash cam footage submitted by MoP of idiocy on the roads and does a great job but hardly anyone knows what he does. First time FFRR owner

I saw some advertised on WeChat (Chinese app like Insta andWhatsApp) the other day that were able to be wired to a dash button. Press the button and the plates go blank white, release it and they come back as normal. I can see those catching on. They were expensive though like £200 a set or something. But as with all this stuff, the price will soon drop if they start selling. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black
