Will be watching this.

Mine is MY17 (Jan17) so has 3G modem. I don’t use the traffic alerts, but I’m going to assume the speed limit signs displayed in the dash come from the Nav/3G? That’s going to be an absolute annoyance if that is going to be switched off, I really like that feature!

I don’t think the hardware could be updated - maybe there’s a way to switch out to a facelift/4G one? (Might be way more hassle/expense than it’s worth)

Traffic sign recognition is from a combination of the navigation map data (loaded via USB) and the forward facing cameras by the rear view mirror, so not affected by the loss of 3G.

As I understand the critical part is the telematics control unit and it is this that would need updating to use 4G.
Allegedly JLR were looking at a way to upgrade the 2017 models but that seems to have been binned.

The only moderately useful information I found comes from a few years ago in the USA.

Can’t find mention of a specific TCM, could be a function/piggy back on the nav control unit which is a cool £1200 part.

Am gutted I didn’t hold out for the facelift tbh!

5G dongles are now available, but the price is a bit steep, -over £500! 😳 still nice to have 5G in your ffrr if you can afford it Whistle “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Hi, although 3G services in the UK will terminate as mentioned above it is worth noting that 2G services will be maintained till 2033 at least.

So theoretically things will all still work if you put in a 2G SIM (yes, you can buy them for older phones from EE & Vodafone) but you'll obviously get inferior data rates. (H3G do not have a 2G network).

I've not actually tried it, but the theory is sound.

Andy, is a 3G/4G SIM not backwards compatible with 2G anyway? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Hi, yes, it should be for EE, i.e. if no 3G service available should default back to 2G, however, that's not going to work for H3G as they don't have a 2G network.

I'm not sure about O2 & Vodafone. The likes of Tesco etc are air time providers, they don't have their own networks. Fuji White / Jet 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

Thanks Andy,
Fortunately mine is EE, but I am contemplating a switch to O2 for cost & coverage reasons, the “dip” where I live has zero 5G and very poor 4G with EE. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Now the 3G network is switched off for most providers is there any update on this? Specifically interested in those of you that have the 2017 SVA's or similar with the updated upper Infotainment screen. As I understand it although they updated the infotainment for MY2017 the SIM modem was still only 2G/3G and it wasn't until the MY2018 updates where the lower touchscreen was added that a 4G modem was also added. Is this correct?

For those with the 2G/3G setups does the remote access stuff all still work on just 2G or has some other option / update for these cars been made available. About to close a deal on purchasing a MY2017 SVA and not having these features could be a deal breaker or at least a discussion point on price!

My 17 build 18 reg car has an EE 4G sim, remote and everything else works fine. It has a full MD service history but unable to confirm if it was due to a software update.
