Diesel fuel age limit

I’ve had a 20L Jerry can of diesel in storage for a couple of years which I bought for ‘emergencies’ ( forecourt shortages, zombie apocalypse etc) but now reckon I probably don’t need it but have had no definitive answer to the question is it still Ok to use or should I dispose of it. Seems the main issue is bio fuel content getting algal growth rather than the fuel itself just degrading as I’d have thought the main hydrocarbon component is pretty stable? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I would use it to power a heater or an old tractor but risking it in any modern diesel engine to save £30? No chance

Hi, if it were a Landy I'd say just go for it, they're designed to run on any old sludge you can lay your hands on in the likes of Africa and beyond.

TD6, wouldn't bother me if I mixed in 10l per tankful of other stuff.

TDV8, wouldn't bother, fuel system too delicate and injectors too expensive to risk it.

Or you could just sell it to the guy next door with his puffing D3 TDI for 1/2 price.

In what ways does the fuel degrade so it can cause damage - assumimng there is no water in it or algal growth as it's been kept in a clean sealed metal container in a cool place. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

A quick google brings up

Time is the enemy of diesel fuel quality. Oxidative instability can occur slowly during long-term storage or be accelerated by warm temperatures, the presence of free water and contaminants. This degradation can lead to high acid number, high viscosity and the formation of gums and sediment

So maybe best not to use it...!! Pete

I’m using 15 + year old diesel on my lawnmower bought it in bulk, prior to the bio fuel being brought in: Just fine.

On the other hand I kept 60l in france as nearly caught out by a fuel strike & it’s enough to get me home. I rotated that fuel every six months as it was bio diesel. Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc
