Silicon or PTFE - which should I use ? I usually get so confused that I put it off & then don't do anything, which may be worse than using the 'wrong' one.

I've not done anything to mine & fear that one day it will refuse to play.

I don't think there's a wrong one between silicon and PTFE for this application - although the PTFE should last longer. The problem with std WD40 is that despite it spraying on well and quickly working in to the areas needing lubrication, its not actually very good as a long term lubricant - ends up just attracting dust/dirt to hang around. The silicon and PTFE versions spray on the same, but leave a coating on the surfaces which acts as a longer term lube - the low friction nature of both materials means they both work well. But just like anything else, they'll get blasted/wiped/rubbed off over time so need reapplying periodically. Mike - MPx

Rinsed with lots of water and sprayed with rust-dissolving spray.

No signs of dirt or rust on the shaft above the rubber grommet, though, and factory grease left.

Didn't help.

Just ordered a motor and gearbox from PowerfulUK.

When I drop the entire assembly to inspect, I could just as well have one around...

Now traveling for a couple of weeks. Will report back when there is progress.

I thought mine was goosed (technical term) as it failed to deploy (or retract for that matter) a couple of times. I just keep trying, holding the button in (not the on/off button) as apparently it delivers a volt or two more to the towbar motor and so far it has always worked for me.

I had a similar issue with the deployable towbar on my F Pace. It repeatedly failed to go back into the stow position and I was sure it was going to be an expensive fix.
And then I realised that I had forgotten to remove the 13pin to 7 pin adapter…….
Oh how I laughed Censored

Fixed it

I finally had time to fix it today.

It was not necessary to remove the tow bar. I only needed to remove the plastic bumper cover along with some other trim pieces. Then there is a plastic lid on top of the tow bar beam which covers the mechanism. The lid was attached with some soft sealant and easy to partially lift up.

Everything looked nice and clean in there.

When I tried to deploy, the motor only turned a little in one direction and then reversed again. No movement of the tow-bar. The motor and gear box sounded very good, though.

Next thing was to disassemble the mechanism at the ball joint. That loosened things up, and it was possible to deploy. Something was stuck, and I think it was the ball joint.

I ran the tow bar in and out a few times while adding some grease to the screw and the ball joint.

Then I put some 3M Duct Tape around the lid and reassembled.

Mission completed.

I didn't need the motor and gear case from Powerful UK.

Sounds pretty much like many of my repairs - I end up with new bits that I didn't really need if only I'd dug a little further the first time Confused I fitted a new radio to my boat this week, only to discover that the new one didn't work either. I should really have checked the power supply.....

My thinking was that I’d rather have a spare motor and gear case collecting dust than have to assemble and disassemble twice.

By the way, I learned in the comments to the PowerfulUK YouTube video that you can unscrew the gear box from the motor, so I would at a minimum have had a spare motor.

Update

When trying to deploy the tow-bar one week later, it was stuck again. This time, a strong pull by hand was enough to help the motor and get the tow-bar to deploy.

However, after actually using the car to tow, it now works fine every time.
