The tailgate strips weren't on the earlier cars, they only appeared on the later ones. When the ones on my 2012 started to corrode and look scruffy I just removed them and didn't bother to replace them as the tailgate looks cleaner without them. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I assumed they had a purpose maybe part of a ‘sealing system’? I guess you’ve not had any issues since removing them? 1972 Series 3 full of character 1985 90 pick up went anywhere 1992 90 Exported 2007 L322 that was an experience 2010 D4 more versatile than a Swiss army knife, now gone 2011 L322 4.4 VSE |

They have a rubber tab on the lower end which was impossible to tuck back under the glass so I cut that off and pushed the strips onto each side of the glass. They fit tight enough without it and they haven’t moved since fitting them. Upper edge which tucks under the spoiler has some sealant already applied to the new rubber so just had to peel off the protective film on it and then press down firmly. You will see the rubber tabs I’m talking about when you get the new ones.
