Front parking sensors..

Hi,

Following on from http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic6396.html I no longer have my front parking sensors working since I picked it up. Rear are fine. I've removed fuse 6 (5amp) in the fusebox for 5 mins and then put it back, but that hasn't fixed it.

Any ideas anyone before I speak Twisted Evil to Lancaster, WGC on Monday? Gavin

you probably know already but the front sensors only work if engaged by selecting reverse or manually pressing the button...
if they were faulty ,i think you would get a constant beeping..

there is a test you can do to see if your sensors are working or in your case to find out which one is faulty ...im afraid i cant remember how to do it but there is a thread about it so maybe try the search function Thumbs Up if i find it ill give you the link "RANGEISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED"

If you have a battery issue or can fault the sensors are switched to silent try removing neg lead off battery for 30mins then reconnect

OK there are a number of things to check for with a front PDC fault.

1. The front sensors can be disabled through IDS. Check to make sure the workshop didn't tick that box by mistake when working on your car.

2. When you activate the PDC (either by selecting reverse or pushing the button on the centre console) what do you see/hear? If you get a long beep and a pulsing switch LED the PDC ECU has detected a fault and has isolated the relevant end of the system.

3. Can you hear any "ticking" from the front sensors wen you put your ear to them? Ones that tick are fine, ones that don't are duff. Either the sensor or the wiring feeding it. Check the integrity of the wiring for a non ticking sensor with a multimeter or if you don't have one just swap it for one that is ticking. If the swapped one doesn't tick then it is the wiring and if it does then it is the sensor.

4. The PDC ECU is behind the fuse board in the drivers side boot cubby and has 3 connectors on the top. You can check to see if the ECU is duff by trying another box. The price for a new one escapes me but the part is common across all vehicles that have PDC installed. There is no need to configure the module either it is just plug and play. Alternatively you could ask a friendly forum member with a working PDC system to let you try their ECU to isolate that component. It is about a 30 minute job in total so you could have a brew whilst doing the swap...

To be honest if all is looking normal with 2. not applying to your situation I would say it was the ECU but having said that the sensors are quite fragile. I had the same issue as you and the dealer couldn't find the issue. I ended up following the above procedure myself and replaced the ECU and 2 front sensors.

Dan has found that the BMW PDC ECU is compatible and picked one up off eBay for peanuts. Sensors are about £45 each and come primed ready for painting. They do come up on eBay now and again but they are specific to FFRR. I managed to pick up a set of 4 new ones for £50. Paint is available from your local friendly parts dept and comes in a small aerosol, one with your colour and another with the top coat lacquer. It is extremely easy to use and is probably the best painted part of the car...

All in all a bit of a faff to fix but not the most arduous of tasks.

If you do a search for PDC faults on the forum you will find a guide on how to remove the front bumper to access the sensors.

Excellent write up. My money is on the numpty's disabling them when disabling the 'doors lock above certain speed' option or trying to fold the mirrors in/out on alarm arming/disarming (I'm sure this can be done???)

As it's only 6 weeks into it's warranty I'm not looking to fix it myself - they or the other dealer it's booked into can do that. In saying that, I emailed the Dealer principle about my experience at his dealership and despite mentioning 'Range Rover' twice in the email he replied back to me saying ... "I’m really sorry to hear of these issues with your new Discovery."

The options that you had completed on your last visit reside in the body control module and are known as key options, unfortunately the wing mirrors folding in and out on lock/unlock isn't one of them...

For the technician to have accidentally disabled your front PDC he would have had to save his work on the body control module, upload the info back to the car and then enter the PDC ECU to be given the option to disable it. This is highly unlikely really even for some of the monkeys that get employed by the so called specialists.

If all of the indications in the car are normal then the ECU won't have logged an error code for IDS to pick up on, therefore it will come back serviceable. This will stump the grease monkey in the work shop because computer says no!

I will be very surprised if they think to listen to the sensors individually...

You can try and provide some guidance from my previous post but be prepared to wait a very long time to get you car back!

hi the sensors just pop out of bumper with fine srewdriver,no need to take front bumper off.
when popping them out though it is the outer ring you need to pop out its about 35mm dia and not the actual sensor which is aprox 20mm dia, once out they then unclip from the outer ring.
its a 10second job to remove sensors Very Happy Range rover hse

Does that apply to the rears too? One of mine is activating as if something's right behind the car which is starting to get annoying. 2006 Mercedes CLS

I haven't tried rear sensors but had a quick look at them comparing front ones and they look identical to me so I would bet they just pop out the same,use something really fine just to slide in and they just slide out, literally took me longer to bend down to them than it did to remove. If you have RAVE software there is diagram showing they just pop out it is in FITTING ACCESSORIES section showing how to fit front nudge bar as you have to remove them to fit the nudge bar.
