Re-map - 4.4 SDV 8?

Newish owner of 2017 4.4l Auto.

Never done a re-map of any car before but I have seen loads of adverts and posts about re-maps (as opposed to mechanical tuning).

What is the benefit of a re-map other than to perhaps make the car more sportier?
I don't want to sacrifice fuel for performance. If anything, I would want any re-map to made it more fuel efficient.

I haven't bothered with my SDV8 as it doesn't feel lacking to me.

I have had remaps on earlier cars - and paid the additional insurance premiums. It just didn't feel worth it to me when I bought an SDV8.

Other remaps I had done didn't really improve economy, but did increase performance & in particular the delivery of that performance on the 3.6 TDV8. However, the SDV8 feels smooth & consistent in its delivery & plenty fast enough for me.

Even if there was any improvement to the real MPG (as opposed to what the computer tells you) it would take many, many years to recover the cost.

Like Alistair, I’ve had previous RR’s remapped, I’m
on my 4th 4.4 V8 Diesel and they simply don’t need it - the power delivery is still astonishing and there’s not many cars can outgun them.

Just a comment I had from a service lady in the main agent - she’s a Top Gear sort of lady if you get my drift and loves fast cars - she did mention that several have had remaps and it’s led to issues - not with the gearbox or the engine, but the engine management system going into limp mode - perhaps due to back street budget maps.

If you are going to do it, I’d go for a well know brand like DMS or JE engineering, who are well known for what they do 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

It’s possible to take the terrain selector from a RR Sport of similar age and install it in the FFRR. The selector from the sport has an additional mode compare to the full fat which is dynamic mode for alleged better road handling and responsiveness etc etc.

With it installed, you can then unlock the use of it through enabling the setting in the config of the car.

That being said, I find that just switching the gearbox into Sport mode goes a long way to stiffing up the suspension and handling for normal driving. V8 or else ...

I could swear that it adjusts the damping too … not to make it like a hot hatch on cornering, but it definitely seems to control straight line wallow … especially if there is weight in the car. V8 or else ...

Dynamic mode in the Sport adjusts the damping etc.

Sport mode on the transmission module just puts the transmission into Sport mode. That's why in the Sports, you have to select both Dynamic mode and S mode on the transmission separately.

The car does feel significantly more sprightly though!


Remap wise, not really worth it on the SDV8. There aren't any flat spots in the power delivery curve, and the transmission is a HP70, opposed to 90, so you're limited by torque output from any power gains, as the vehicle is already limited to 700Nm torque output. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

It definitely firms up the damping plus reduces the delay from the anti-roll system so it's a bit flatter going into corners. I used Dynamic mode quite a lot on mine to reduce the roll when pushing on a bit. MY23 Panamera E-Hybrid

I have not seen a gearbox file on one of these so don't know what the torque map limits are but easy enough to fool and overcome. SDV8

It's the design output of the transmission.

Yes, a transmission will take more torque than the design specification, but why take the risk?

If the vehicles had the 90 transmission, I'd understand but because they're already limited at 700Nm to protect the transmission, I'd caution going much over, which would inevitably come through a remap. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
