Late L322 or early L405

As the title suggests I'm on the hunt for a replacement vehicle.

Initially I was sure I wanted an L322 Westminster but having done a bit more reading I was wondering what peoples opinions were regarding a late L322 versus an L405?

I'm sure it's highly subjective, but i'd interested to hear peoples opinions.

That's an often used cliche and has some merit, however you need to decide what your priorities are in terms of what you plan to use the car for.

I've had both and can say that, hands down the L405 is a much better and comfortable car. The L322 has character but for me, the L405 takes comfort to a different level.

The newer L405 did suffer from front suspension issues that are well documented here and elsewhere.

I upgraded in January from a late L322 (2011) 4.4 TDV8 to an L405 SDV8.

I would say that both are spectacular cars in their own way. The late L322 was streets apart from those 2009 and before.

I would say that it depends what you want to use the car for.

The L322 is a better tow car. The extra bulk over the L405 definitely helps keep it planted on the road. The seats are also more comfortable than the L405, and the separate heat controlled upper vents mean you can have toasty warm feet after walking through a wet field, whilst getting cool air to the face so you don't fall asleep. The full double glazing on late models really makes is quiet also.

The L405 is absolutely astounding for the money. I previously thought the L405 price increase over the L322 was far too steep, but the cars are entirely different and I'm glad I made the switch. The steering is light, there's hardly any roll in the corners, the air suspension is fantastic, and for me, the active cabin noise cancellation you get in the Autobiography is well worth the extra cash. As an added bonus, I get 9mpg more across the board. The downsides - very few really, and as mentioned above. With a 3 tonne + trailer attached, it's definitely not as stable as the L322 was. I really like the quietness of it and also how ridiculously quick it is. The sound system in the Autobiography is sublime. The massage seats are nice but a bit frustrating that they turn off every 10 minutes (I'm working on an emulation to keep them running). All I wish really is that it has the L322 seats. I may try new bases to see if that helps.

After i got my hands on it, mine has now done 112,000 and not missed a beat. Also no electrical gremlins.

Regardless, the engines and gearboxes are the same. If you don't do many miles or have a deep pocket, the 5.0L petrol is the one to have. For everything else, the 4.4 TDV8/SDV8 is the engine to have. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

I also upgraded from a 2011 tdv8, my first and only ever diesel to an L405 in January. I had that L322 for 10 years but I'm now retired and do a lot less miles so now have a 5.0 and what a machine! It handles so much better and l don't have any issue with the seats. It's a 71 plate p525 AB and had most of what l was looking for with the exception of the executive rear seats, you can keep them!

Yeah, £355 for my L322 against about £1300 for an L405 for me. Had mine nearly 9 years. Aluminium body would be a big pull for me, but still never been in an L405…. Not by choice, just not been near one. Was nearly tempted with the one Cam Tech Craig listed, as it’s a wonderful colour, but I’d miss ivory leather.

Spain 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Baltic Blue

I had this quandary earlier in the year.

Switch a L405 or keep the 2012 Westie.

I’ve never hankered after an L405, and I’m still head over heels in love with our L322, 5+ years in. I often just gaze at her in sheer admiration. The looks, style, capabilities etc.

So, we are keeping Westie as our big capable car and purchased a shopping cart instead, 2024 Mini, for supermarket runs and local pottering. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior
1997 P38 2.5 DSE auto & 1998 P38 2.5 DT Manual
1988 Vogue 3.5 EFI - Manual, gone.
2004 Volvo C70 2.0T convertible, had since new.

Depends on why you are considering it. If you want a Range Rover because you want a Range Rover then it has to be the L322 no question.

If you want a luxury limo that can swallow a huge load, tow 3.5 tonnes, traverse an entire country non stop in any weather and go off road all in the same vehicle and all at the same time with the emphasis on the limo element then go for the 405.

Neither are cheap to own in the long run.

Seems very few instances here of people going for one or the other and then regretting their choice that I can see, you'll be impressed whichever you go for, but it's like comparing a Tonka Toy to a video game, Meccano vs Gameboy.

Go for the best condition one you can afford and keep a few grand in the bank each year for repairs & maintenance whichever one you choose. Mileage isn't really a factor as 150k and up around and still going strong. Fuji White / Jet 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

I was in the same boat, and looked for a Westminster for some time. My wife never liked the boxy l322. And one day walking home from the pub she saw an l405 and said that’s a much nicer shape.

I thought they were out of reach financially until I started looking, I couldn’t believe how cheap they’d gotten.

So an l405 was a no brainer, I get a FFRR and keep the wife happy 👍😃.

The L322 is an amazing car, without any doubt. But to my eyes, it's looking just a little dated now against the L405. Given the choice, I'd personally go for the newer shape.

Also consider that the L405 has an all aluminium monocoque body, so doesn't suffer with the corrosion issues to the rear arches, rear lower wing, cills / jacking points and rear tailgate like an L322 does (tailgate issue specific to later L322's though).

The L405's significant weight saving of 400+ Kg's, also gives better performance and economy.

Whilst a 2012 L322 shouldn't have any significant corrosion, it will need intervention to stop it from happening in the future.

I think the L405 looks dated now and the L322 looks distinguished and timeless.
While the L405 won't have the body rust issues of the L322 I'd worry about the galvanic corrosion on older cars. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I’ve had several of both - the L405 is far better, handling is on a different level particularly the V8’s the boot is deeper but the 322 roof has more height in the boot - that’s the only negative comment I have 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
