United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Java Black

There have been a couple of people's Range Rover history on here so I thought I might as well add my 2p. As the topic title suggests this is number 6 for me, 2 were P38's and now onto my 4th L322.

My first was a 1999 P38 4.6 HSE, I bought for £1250 unseen over the internet from a Honda dealer 250 miles from home. A moment of madness, I then paid a man to deliver it to my parents. It was a similar cost to a train ticket believe it or not. To my astonishment this bizarre purchase went well and it wasn't a bad car by any means. I had it for roughly 2 years and in that time it required a set of airbags and the compressor rebuilding. I also had a new radiator fitted and one or two other small items but on the whole a great car and I will miss the old girl forever. I sold it just before my son was born in an ill thought out plan to save money and be more practical. (I had my BMW 650i at the time which I didn't want to sell, the replacement for the P38 was a 530i Touring - a nice car but no range rover.)





Number two came when my son was around 6 months old, the 530i did not last very long. This was was a late 2001 Vogue (4.6 of course). This was a fairly straight car although initially had a curious ABS fault - its quite well known now but the ABS ECU had failed internally and was giving strange faults. After a bit of head scratching I tested the wiring continuity in the car and took a punt on a used ABS ECU which resolved it. Other than that I had few other problems with that car other than a latch failing on the passenger front door. I sold this car to buy a new Range Rover, the 650i also went at the same time, it went to a chap who did the jobs it needed and what I might call a small restoration and it made a stunning car out of an already nice example. Always regrets, perhaps I should have done these jobs as nice ones are getting sought after these days.



This started something of a tradition of a set of photos I will treasure for ever, here is my son Thomas aged about 14 months.




Then came the first 2006 MY07 Supercharged which I bought from Mike, MPX on here. It was a brilliant car, gave almost no bother at all and we enjoyed this car with a trip round the NC500. One issue it did have was an annoying problem with the glovebox release switch which failed and caused a battery drain. I had another issue after having the gearbox serviced it leaked oil which was not the cars fault at all but the garage that serviced it. Eventually got that sorted but it was extremely annoying! A wonderful car, quiet comfortable and plenty of power. However, I got the bug for an E60 M5 which is another very special car so the S/C was sold for the M5 - which hurt but I do still have the M5 after 4.5 years.

A few months without a Range Rover lead me to this interesting machine, a 2002 4.4 HSE, it was cheap £2500, it was rough but it seemed OK. I had not realised how basic the HSE cars felt compared to a Vogue or better until I owned one. However that first drive home, there was just something not quite right. In hindsight I should perhaps have just taken it back to the previous owner but its difficult in a private sale. It didn't improve in the final couple of miles towards home when it developed a horrific noise - turned out the drivers side front brake heat shield had been glue gunned back on and had fallen off. I spent quite a bit of money on it, brakes, calipers, tyres, wheel bearings various service items. The compressor was also shot, so I rebuilt that and could not for the life of me fix the EAS until I realised that somehow it had put its self in transport mode. After that it was largely OK although one day the wipers packed up in torrential rain - it never did it again but another odd moment. I eventually swapped this thing for an X5 which was OK, but again not a range rover. It lasted 6 months and was sold on. The car cropped up a couple of times though, for stupid reasons I ended up with the history for it - the X5 owner "forgot" the history and it never turned up... Anyway, by change I found the next owner and managed to reunite the car and its file and it then ended up being bought by an acquaintance of mine by this time it was getting very tired and I believe its last move went to Blackpool and has now ended its days.

I then managed two months without a Range Rover but then went and bought 2004 4.4 Vogue which was not an expensive car, £2700 as I recall, but it turned out to be a semi precious stone in the rough. It was a rocky start with the transfer box potentiometer and the navigation computer plus some corroded pins here and there but once I had ironed all that out it gave me 2.5 years of relatively reliable service. Sadly at its last MOT in October 2021 it needed brake lines and some other bits which was the first proper expense. As I've detailed in the other thread about this car a friend of mine was keen to buy it after borrowing it and I eventually gave in which left me without a Range Rover. But it was a good car and we both liked it.

Which brings us onto my current 2006 MY07 Supercharged, very much the same car in spec as the previous supercharged and I think will be with us for a while. Range Rovers have become a large part of family life, we don't use them for every journey but lots with plenty of memories!

Thanks yes its been an interesting few years. The M5's have been fun as well, the E60 is so far beyond what would be acceptable in a saloon in this modern world that it feels like its from a different age.

Rather annoyingly the EML returned today a quick code read was multiple misfires rather than the o2 sensor which I am pleased about but these random misfires from cold will need some further investigation. I suppose the first job is a set of plugs and perhaps coils but I would expect a fault coil to give misfires all the time rather than just when cold. 2005 E60 M5

Well both actually, it did have a full tank of super the time before last but when I filled it at the weekend it was regular 95. Never had an issue with 95 in any range rover before. 2005 E60 M5

It's been a while since I updated this but first news, MOT late last week and passed so that is good news.

However my o2 sensor issue has returned, some time ago actually. It is a bit strange, the sensor reports low voltage, but what I think it means is the oxygen content of the exhaust is incorrect but I don't actually know what the relationship is, I.E is low oxygen content a low or high voltage output? On live data the sensor does read a normal value at medium to high throttle loads, only when at idle or driving gently/steady cruise does the voltage drop away. The sensor is not at fault, something is wrong with the exhaust output from the car. I do wonder if its an air leak or something.

I also get a small misfire on all 4 cylinders of the same bank on a cold start. I've replaced the PCV valve as its also on that bank but doesn't seem to have helped. What is strange though is after 30 seconds its absolutely smooth as a nut and doesn't bother it at all.

After the first 30 seconds its absolutely perfect without a hint of a miss or any issue. Fuel economy is bang on where I'd expect it to be and performance is perfect. Its happily done 200/300 miles in a day without any issue.

Next issue is the RSE DVD player has jammed in the back so I need to try and fetch that out using the wiki on here when I get a minute. I assume its a mixture of the cold, age and lack of lubrication. 2005 E60 M5

Another small update, earlier this week I took the old girl for a service and a smoke test to see if there were any air leaks. They found a small one and rectified it. Oil service complete, and some investigation into the o2 sensor issue.

I doubt it'll be any better but will see how it goes.

RSE DVD changer still jammed, its on the to do list. I also still need to fit the digital TV tuner. I have very little time with having had a new baby for a total of three now.

Range Rover is the perfect family machine.

I can't believe its been almost a year since I updated this!

Through the rest of 23 the car was generally OK. I've not had to do much with it

MOT came in January of 2024 and was a relatively good pass, this ellusive small oil leak which it doesnt drop any on the ground still appears. About 1300 miles between MoT's in 2023 and 2024.

However, a couple of weeks ago my daily EV let me down, due to a failed AC compressor (in a Model S this is on the HV circiuit and renders the car undriveable which is annoying) so the poor old L322 has been forced into front line service have covered about 1000 miles in the last two weeks its come as quite a shock to the old girl and also my wallet!

Where does the time go!

Scotland 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Fuji White

Hi, I don't really go for the back on black with tints look, to me it's a bit chavvy, but no doubt it is a nice car all the same.

The headlights look like they could do with a polish, some polishing compound and a good mop should see those right afer 10 mins work.

It does lift a car when the lights are crystal clear as to opaque after a few years and and almost no cost if you have a decent polisher.

The quadruple black in this case was not my first choice, however finding an MY07 supercharged with terrain response is difficult. When I was looking a couple of years ago it was the only car I found in months that fit the bill. Yes the headlamps are a bit tired, I did polish them last year by hand which helped but generally the car is not that great cosmetically.

I'm contemplating upgrading it this year but its hard to justfy when it generally gets so little use. 2005 E60 M5
