4.4 TDV8 Oil Leak - do I travel this easter?

Just noticed an oil leak on my garage floor last night, a few dried drops and one small wet one, looking around and underneath as best I can it is from the back of the engine but in front of the gearbox area. Estimate since service late february lost between .25l and .5l of oil (reading from the gauge cluster).

My local shop cannot lift car up tomorrow they are too busy getting everyone else ready for their easter trips.

Have a 3000km trip coming up this easter weekend Confused do I go on the trip or not?
Is it possible something might not have been fastened right at the service?
Any suggestions of cause? 2011 Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Oil cooler gaskets and / or feed-pipe O-rings. Do NOT do 3000km - you'll regret it.

Job can be done DIY in 5-6hrs if you have the parts available. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom Smile

Check for oil in the coolant header tank. If it's clear you should be OK for your big trip as long as you keep an eye on the oil level. Also check for a leak around the oil filter as this is the only service related possible cause. There are no common issues with catastrophic oil loss on these engines. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

It is also worth checking that the drain valve under the oil filter itself is still on it's locating post if the filter has recently been changed.

I didnt notice anything around the oil filter or cooler, but not sure i have right knowledge or understanding to properly investigate. Though Im convinved leak is from lower down than the oil filter. 2011 Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

As I said earlier the most critical thing to decide if it's OK to drive for a bit longer is oil in the coolant 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Losing 0.5l sounds a bit much for just the turbo feed pipe o rings
So def check the header tank

These are very common problems
I was driving around for several hundred miles with a failed gasket in the oil cooler resulting in oil getting into the coolant. AND with failed o rings on the turbo feed pipe at the back of the engine
It’s not a biggie

New o rings
Changed gasket. (Some folk prefer to change out the oil cooler as well because the gasket fails due to the oil cooler warping)
Change header tank
Flush and change coolant

Small bit of oil in the coolant has not caused any obvious damage. Oil and coolant mixing suggests not just oil in the coolant but also coolant in the oil. My local main dealer did the work on my car…they did not change the engine oil.
