Alignment before/after new tyres, or no difference ?

Hello, am getting some wheels refurbished, and shop reported the rears needed straightening and the inside of the tyres had worn more.

These were budget tyres from purchase, so was planning to replace anyway.

I read a lot of good things about Hunter 4wd alignment on here, as it seems more likely to be alignment than buckled wheels, so was thinking of doing that rather than scrub £500 of new tyres.

Does alignment machine measure from tyre or from wheel hub? The hunter systems are a little way from me so need to pick which to do first !

The equipment aligns using the rims, not the tyres. If they do it properly, the wheels are rotated during the equipment attachment to adjust for rims with a slight buckle.

If your wheels have been hit hard enough to buckle them I would say having your alignment checked would very worthwhile particularly as you already have uneven wear.

Do you know how many miles the car has done since the last check? Kevin

Makes sense, thanks, not sure how you hit the rears hard, unless fronts were switched onto the rears.

Car is on 85k and no record of alignment in book, so may never have been done...

I've had loads of 4 wheel alignments done and none of them have been recorded 'in the book'. I do have all the receipts though.

Worth having all the suspension bushes and arms checked before new tyres, the rear hub bushes wear and can cause uneven tyre wear...

Then fit refurbished wheels and new tyres, check suspension heights, then Hunter alignment after using diagnostic tool to set suspension in tight tolerance mode...

Hopefully job done... Thumbs Up Pete

By 'in the book' I mean in the service folder, like you I keep my receipts in there. May have been done with new tyres but who knows. What prompted so many 4 wheel alignments, were you having uneven wear?

Thanks Haylands, I found a tyre place who use Hunter alignment for £75 which seems reasonable (might be the price just with new tyres possibly).
How would you go about checking the bushes? I am assuming it will be the two near the brake caliper (5K792A and or B, not the big ones underneath where the arms connect to the body. No sign of damage from the outside of them and no knocking over bumps.

It's not that many really, mostly when changing cars and suspension bits and over a good number of years.

Any decent garage, especially MOT ones, can check the bushes for you, you would hope the garage who does the alignment would do it but a lot don't... just worth getting things looked at before you spend more money... Thumbs Up Pete
