It is a shame it is all hidden away - but I have the satisfaction of knowing it has all been sorted.

Mark_O - In answer to your questions

I have 4 of these plastic ramps which give a lift of about 150mm but are low enough to go under the sills so you can drive up all 4 at the same time. Car set in offroad height.

I then removed the engine undertray to expose front subframe to permit side to side balanced jacking.

I had made the 4 L322 specific axles stands previously (as pictured in an earlier post)

However to get the height required I then made these riser stands which give another 200mm.



Jacked the front as high as required to get the stands in using standard trolley jck but with fabricated riser block



Then jacked the rear using a bottle jack on the middle of the rear crossmember. The head of a bottle jack is small enough to go between the exhaust pipes. I put a piece of steel plate between the crossmember and the bottle jack head to spread the point load.

Make sure bottle jack operating handle is long enough so that you are not under the vehicle when lifting. The front end was already supported on the axle stand and the whole thing was fairly stable.

Budget is another question!! I have not added it all up. I used all genuine bushes from a number of sources - Duckworths for the main subframe bushes but other NOS from ebay.

The diff mounting bushes I changed otherwise they would have been cooked when the subframe was powder coated. They were OEM via Autodoc using the BMW parts numbers which were easily readable on the bushes.

Brembo discs and pads from Autodoc. New TRW carriers and calipers from ebay. All the nuts and bolts were from Island4x4.

It is a question of just searching for the best prices.

I was able to make all the tooling for pressing bushes in and out. I did buy from ebay the boxed set sold specifically for replacing BMW X5 subframe bushes but only ended up using part of the set as it does not fit the genuine LR bushes - they are obviously longer than the BMW bushes in the centre core area and I had to but spacers tubes in to allow them to draw the bushes fully home.

Think we all agree that it's a shame that all of it is hidden away.

That's some impressive effort to get the height you needed there. Looking forward to the summer to have a bash myself to get the underside straight, may try and deal with any underbody rust at the same time too. You might get a random ping for tooling rent too.

What's next on your list?

I like your axle stands, very neat.

I did my rear subframe in 2022 but used the ramp in our home workshop to do it. It’s very satisfying to know it’s all done properly. Despite my car not feeling bad to drive, it felt noticeably better after all of the bushes were renewed.
