IMO it's helpful but not crucial to use tight tolereance mode when doing a wheel alignment and tight tolerance is only worth it if you have recently calibrated the suspension to account for wear using a GAP IID tool or similar. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I have a good Autel unit that can calibrate so another great suggestion. even though she looks even its no harm in checking.

I presume on the wiki we have the correct heights from centre wheel cap to wheel arch do we? Current yokes

Ah ok, never heard of that before Weegie, I have heard of different settings on the alignment machines. I dont have an IID tool yet as its just too expensive here compared to the UK so will have to leave that option I guess

Do you mean using an OBD2 unit from the likes of snap on ect.? Sorry for the dumb question but this car is making me learn lots of new things and this is one of them!! Current yokes

Some have the capability via OBD. You would need to check with whoever you go to. It's been suggested that you don't need to go into tight tolerance mode but tight tolerance is what is stated to be necessary for accuracy. John

Tyre alignment specialists are unlikley to have the software to put the car into tight tolerance mode. Tight tolerance mode continualy adjusts the height at each corner to mm accuracy where as the standard setup just adjusts > +/-10mm. It's unlikley normal tolerance will have any adverse effect on the overal alignment esp when bushes and joints have age related wear. The most important thing is to get a 4 wheel alignment whatever system. An out of spec rear thrust angle will cause an off centre steering wheel if just the fronts are just adjusted for toe and the steering wheel locked at 12 o'clock. It's also highly unlikley any wheel alignment woud have been done without a steering lock fitted. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hi, you shouldn't have any issue with doing an alignment on part worn tyres, I have it done as part of a major service regardless of the tyres life as long as I can remember.

You can actually tell a lot from the worn tyres, whether wearing on the inner or outer edges is a clue to alignment, excess toe in, out etc, wearing on both edges or in the middle tells of under or over inflation. Run your hand lightly around the circumference of the tread, if its smooth one way and rough the other you need to rotate your tyres as it showing signs of saw tooth tyre wear.

If your car's not pulling to one side or the other on an uncambered straight road then there's a good chance the front alignment is ok. The only way to check if the rear tracking is off or not by yourself is by tyre wear indications or get someone to follow you down a straight flat road, if it's off your car will crab, i.e. car seems to be driving at an angle. Typical after a rear crash or subframe displacement, quite rare in reality.

As for Flla's comments regarding the garage missing something or inexperience is the very definition of a cowboy, the funny part is he seems to have just accepted it as C'est la vie.

I appreciate the advice but I don't think there was any need for the comment at the end. I don't go to main dealers to service any of my 6 odd cars. I do most mechanic work myself unless it needs a lift or speciality tools. You may not know that I live in Rural Ireland where there isn't a hunter approved alignment centre on every corner but my options here are limited.

As for suggesting the person that did it is a cowboy, no he is not a cowboy but he specialises in rally cars so 4Wd cars this size especially a Range Rover wouldn't be in his garage every day and as everyone always says here about indies, bring it to one that does them everyday.

The land rover dealer in my county closed, the nearest one is 100km away and I wouldn't consider them good at this this type of work The garage that aligned it last and improved it by 50-70% also said try it for a few days and bring it back if it needs tweaking. The tyres on the back are older than the front so they could be throwing the whole thing out.

My last Disco had tie rods done and tracking and it still handled like a pig, turned out the tyres that had plenty of thread on them were worn unevenly and the disco was very sensitive to it. As I say I really appreciate the advice but I think it would be better not to make remarks about me when we obviously dont know each other. We cant all be experts at everything so I lean of the forum when I need wisdom and it has been a blessing. I have also tried to help others since joining.

Anyways I am going back Saturday to have another go. I'm going to calibrate the suspension in the meantime, check all tyres and give the underside another once over in case I missed something. Current yokes

As you have a collection of cars and there are limited resources in your imediate area you can do your own wheel alignments if you are handy at making a few tools and have a flat concrete surface to put your vehicle on. Have a search on Youtube. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Hi Jaydee

I have a horse barn which is only 15 years old and its great but the one thing I dont have is a level floor unfortunately. When I put in a lift later this year I will have to look at pouring a new section of floor.

To be honest, I have never had an issue with tracking on the Subaru, Mx5 or TT. Its always been the land rovers. Even the Pajero tracked better. Hopefully once I have another go on Saturday, do as ye suggest and calibrate the suspension and then Ill have a look at the Snap On XD option myself before we start to track.

Again, there was some excellent tips and advice here so I really really appreciate that. Current yokes
