Bought a project - Engine Replacement in a L405 3.0ltr V6

Hi All, I've recently bought my first L405 2015 3.0ltr v6, with 64k miles on the clock with full LR service history, I will be putting in a brand new crate engine into my car Smile i will post my progress on here and update you all, I've done a few engine changes before on D4 but not on a L405 yet so I know a lot about the engines, my engine has suffered the well known crank shaft failed and snapped and locked up.

So you bought it broken ? Interesting project.

Surely a crate engine would make the whole thing cost ineffective compared to a working one ? I thought the engines were very expensive new. ? V8 or else ...

The car was bought as a none runner, after collecting the car and when i got it home i opened the bonnet and got my big long snap on bar and put it onto the crank bolt..... and solid! My suspicions were right the Gen 1.5 2015 306dt crank had snapped, locked solid.

Engine isn't a problem luckily I have a brand new crate engine sitting in my garage, that's another story I bought a job lot of engines and kept one for myself for the right time and project.

The crate engine is a 2014 Gen 1.5 engine still in its wrapper and crate, plug and play unit, i will be changing the timing belts front and back just because rubber perishes over time and has a cure date being 10 years old its due a belt so its worth changing and I know it will be good for the future.

I will upload some photos of the Engine in the crate for you all do dribble over!Thumbs Up Laughing

Update ! its alive #ProjectSaga !

Well that was an eventful 2 weeks Laughing

Removed the Engine and found it was a Gen 2 Engine Big Cry so its now a big problem my brand new crate engine Gen 1.5 was no good as there's a few things different when you look closely! Banging Head

I will be making a new post to help people like me showing the differences between the 306dt Gen1 & 306DTC Gen 2 engine, it was hard to find any information about the engine difference.

so once I removed the engine cover, I knew straight away I had a problem because it was sat straight in front of me under the engine cover slap bang on the intercooler cooler hose in Black & white writing GEN 2 !! Big Cry

So me being young and stupid! I thought no it cant be that much difference i will just make it fit ! Rolling with laughter So i Removed the engine and had a good look and long and behold there is quite a few things different between the engines.

Gen1.5 engine 2014 - different parts
twin turbo non water cooled (turbo)
oil pump (without solenoid)
water pump (bigger without solenoid)
Engine Block (no hole water return for left hand water cooled turbo) (no extra oil gallery for oil pump) (water pump hole is smaller)

Gen 2 Engine 2015 onwards - different parts
mine was a single turbo but also come in twin turbo too, left hand turbo was bigger and had water cooled turbo.
oil pump had a solenoid on the oil pump (this is to lower the oil pressure on idle to make the engine more efficient causing less drag on the engine. ( stupid idea if you ask me no wonder they suffer with oil starvation on the big end and main bearings)

Engine Block has a hole for a water return for left hand water cooled turbo) (extra oil gallery for oil pump) (water pump hole is bigger)

So then I was a bit put off by this started doing a bit of research and asking about on FB forums and a few people said they have heard of people attempting to installed a gen 1 engine into a gen 2 car but this has issues with overheating and oil pressure and warning lights different software.

This did put me off the idea of trying to retro fit a gen1.5 engine into A GEN 2 car so I thought its not going to work and would be more hassle than it worth.

Next idea i had was to rebuild my engine Very Happy so i removed the sum and found that the conrod had failed and come off with a bit of the piston and gudgeon pin still attached Big Cry of further inspection i found that the con rod big end cap bolt had come loose and then fallen out and then the cap had come off and this it had jammed and snapped off at the piston then the crank had jammed it against the block and crack and put a hole in the inside of the block Shocked so this engine was no good and i would not be using it for a rebuild. SCRAP!

Then i went online found another block travelled 4 hrs to see it and found that had the same issue and had a hairline crack in it Shocked the guy had it honed and machined on the main bearings too and said he wasn't aware of the crack and machine shop hadn't picked up on it! Big Cry

So back to look for another block or engine now, i found a guy who had a brand new short motor F150 block that had only done a few dyno hours for testing so i bought that for the new parts it also has a steel forged crank in it and has a better filet design on the crank so its much stronger crankshaft. pistons, conrods, crank, oil pump & water pump are all the same as the Gen 2 engine so once i have found a block i can build up a brand new engine. ( still on the hunt for a good second handed block if anyone has one ? main bearing failure is fine i can get it machined. no holes or cranks tho please Laughing

so after a few days of trying to find a engine and no wanting to buy a new short motor block from land rover for 6k i found a low millage 306DTC Gen2 out of a 2018 L494 RRS perfect for my build all running noting wrong serviced regular, even travelled 4 hours to hear it running before he took it out.

Went back again and picked it up another 4 hour trip each way Shocked got it back to the garage and started stripping the parts off as it was a twin turbo car was add blue but noting was on the engine i switched all of the parts over as i didn't want to get caught out.

she's now up and ruining like a say bit of a saga but bloody lovely to drive my first L405

Excellent! You didn't waste any time!

Did you discover if the later engine with the pressure relief solenoid for idling has the same oil pump capacity as the earlier engine or if it is bigger thereby providing more oil pressure above idle?

No i haven't checked about oil pressure yet but i will try and find out would be interesting, i also have changed my oil grade to 5W 40 to get better oil pressure, and was also I've heard some people disconnect the solenoid on the pump ? has anyone done it on here ?

At least on my iPad, it’s something like choose photo…. Camera roll, press one, add, then do upload… then in your post with the cursor where you want the pic, then press on the pic which should be lower down as an icon….
