He absolutely says it as it is. The media seem, on the whole, unwilling to report any negative stories concerning EVs but at least Harry is speaking up with some sensible balanced views on the issues with the current push to go fully EV.

Harrys done a pretty fair assessment of the EV situation, as he says, EV's aren't for everyone and his vehicle needs would certainly push the envelope for sure. It would seem to be something the government need to reconsider and maybe push EV's / make them more attractive for the people they would work for and leave efficient diesel / petrol vehicles available for the rest. BMW i3 Electric Car

Another review of EVs in a very limited arena.

As Harry says openly - for him it's the money, and he's "mean".

But EVs are about emissions first.

An RR EV is silly. Any big fat EV is silly (imho!)

Electricity is better for smaller cars.

My electric Kia is just brilliant at what it does, probably the best car I've ever had in fact. (Though not my favourite - there's a difference!)

Four years, 35,000miles and nothing rattles, squeaks or knocks.

Acceleration is surprising and as a daily it grips and handles well enough.

It's very comfortable and has plenty of space.

One fault (infotainment system software) sorted under the (7 year) warranty.

My only complaint is that it offers nothing to enthral the motoring enthusiast.

I had the BMW i3S before this (enthusiast's choice). It was stupid and awful in virtually every way.

Not true to say there's no bad news being peddled about EVs - it's everywhere, and partly responsible for so much doubt and the rate of depreciation. Range, fires, too heavy for car parks, stuck locked, kids in mines, etc...

On range: i3S was terrible, Kia excellent.

EV meanies say "oh, the range is so much less than quoted", well how many drivers get the quoted MPG from a petrol/diesel car in the real world? It has taken 100 years to refine how to measure mpg as a guide to what you might expect and it's still only best used as a comparison..

On batteries: Despite what you hear, they are cleaner to produce than oil-sourced fuels but yes, they need electricity from somewhere...

On fires: V4 Zephyrs & Corsairs, Pintos, Corvairs, Miuras, Gallardos, Scimitars, Hurracans, Merc 53s, 2006-8 BMWs and more.

US National Fire Protection Agency says petrol cars 5 times more likely to catch fire than EVs.

U.S. insurance claim stat 2023 - NO EVs in the top approx 25 list of cars likely to catch fire. )Interestingly, quite a few are Kia/Hyundai ICE models!)

Don't get me wrong - I'm not an EV campaigner. I have one because I like old cars (and the RR!) and I feel the environmental books are balanced a bit by having an EV as my daily.

We have two hybrids in the family too.

The Golf GTE gives the best of both worlds for us (electricity for all the local stuff, petrol for long journeys) Battery pack replaced at 144,000miles and seven years - it was working fine but water got in and spoiled everything, just like it would in a petrol or diesel engine.

I guess what I'm saying is that it boils down to individual priorities. And we have more choices than ever and motivation in one direction or the other is more multi-layered than ever.

I do think people who can afford to ease pressure on the environment should be a bit more responsible and properly consider EVs though.

Those with lower budgets should have a good look at used EVs - now that they're so cheap and plentiful!

Like so many things, EVs have their fans and their detractors - most have already formed unalterable opinions based on not very much substance.

Agree with nearly all you posted Reggie - other than i3 range is terrible. I've always seen it very much horses for courses - and most of us fattie owners are in the priviliged position of having more than just one car to rely on for transport. EVs are simply "better" short journey and city cars in just about every respect. Most of our journeys are return trips to one of the three surrounding village/towns each ~5 miles away so the most typical return run is 10 miles. The longest journey we do in the i3 is to family 45 miles away - so a 90 mile trip - the i3 has plenty of range for that - but I would normally take the FF just because its a nicer place to be - I would always choose the Rangie if I'm going to be more than half an hour in the car. I do about 12k miles a year in the Fattie and about 4k miles in the i3. But the i3 is used nearly every day, sometimes several trips a day, whereas the Rangie is maybe twice a week. We don't use the public charge infrastructure so that can of worms is simply irrelevant. Mike - MPx
