I can think of a couple of knocks when they have more than likely saved a light.

As for looks, I'm not sure a functional piece of black plastic really spoils anything in comparison with the perversion most people have for kitting them out like a tinted-and-chromed Bradford pimp wagon (or, along the same lines, the damage caused by the facelift).

On the 2006-2009 lights, the horizontal bar fits between the sidelight and indicator:



Looks like it might just hide one of the fairy lights on the facelift lights (assuming the guards are the same):
