I’m no expert on the Petrol ones, as the only petrol one I had was a 1992 old Range Rover.
The early cars were BMW based, with BMW engines. Either 4.4 V8 petrol or TD6, 3.0 straight 6 single turbo - diesel. The 4.4 suffered a bit with oil leaks and timing chains and perished rubber hoses. The diesel was a very good engine, but a bit noisy and underpowered for the RR. I had one and had it remapped for more torque and power. Was nice then. The gearboxes in them are not very good though as they were made from softer aluminium, so will prob need changing at some point.
Around 2005 the 4.4 BMW engine was replaced with the 4.4 Jaguar petrol V8. That was a very nice engine but only available for about a year. The Jaguar 4.2 Supercharged petrol was then available.
Around 2007, along with an interior upgrade, the TD6 was replaced by the 3.6 TDV8 twin turbo diesel. This was a big upgrade. Very quiet, smooth and powerful. Can suffer from turbo failure though, which will break the engine if turbo bits go into it.
The 3.6 diesel and 4.2 Supercharged were replaced for facelift 2010 model year with the 4.4 TDV8 diesel with 8 speed gearbox and the 5.0 Supercharged petrol.
As mentioned earlier, the diesels will get better miles per gallon and have no electrical system so might be more suitable for splashing through floods. The last of the 3.6 and all the 4.4 diesels will have a DPF, diesel particulate filter, and they really don’t like short runs. I have the 4.4 and it’s epic, but I have to give it a good run occasionally.
Drive a few, see if you prefer petrol or diesel, that will help you narrow down your search.
You don’t have to buy the first one you see. You need to try the different engines.
