There is no doubt that short journeys typically limit the ability for the DPF to regen, and this sinks the time to next service. … which is sorted simply by an oil change and a reset. If you’re prepared to do that yourself then you can get that cost down to around £50 ( 40 ish on oil if you buy from millers, smith n Allan etc etc, 10 for a filter ). + some bit of kit to sook out the oil. Time taken is less than hour.

Even at a low end of 3k miles between services, that’s about £100 to £150 additional running cost. You’d likely spend more than that on the extra petrol cost to cover the same 10-12k miles.

I do a similar amount of miles for me, it’s worth the hassle as the economy still wins out over the long journeys and towing. , but I’m prepared to do the servicing myself. V8 or else ...

I honestly dont think its a major in terms of an oil change. After reading online here and a few you tube videos (Raymies Garage) I am thinking its relatively simple not requiring any ramps etc. Just a extractor pump, the oil and filter and a socket for the oil filter. I have never changed oil before but am prepared to give it a go and have just got my service kit from lrparts.net (unfortunatley shipping is expensive to NZ) and bought some C1 oil locally here in NZ. I am actually looking forward to it.

Prior to the L405 I did have a l494 RRS with the SCV8. I just loved the sound but it did drink like a sailor. Diesel is cheaper overall here in NZ and for context as I have just ticked over 20,000km in the L405 since purchasing it at 91,000km and it is averaging 9.3l/100km (measured on Fuelly) and the SCV8 was at 13.5l/100km after the same distance - both were mostly highway driving. The SCV8 really started to drink the 98 when around town. 2017 L405 Vogue SDV8 AB

I'm just in a position of looking at both engine options.

I tend to agree given the style of driving you are doing and if there are no fuel cost considerations either from a consumption perspective or simply petrol vs diesel cost. For my use case where I was doing 1200km round trips once a month the diesel made more sense. I had the my previous RRS SCV8 remapped with the pulley upgrade and it really was intoxicating but I found just the thought of the cost as I pressed the accelarator dulled my enjoyment. If fuel cost isn’t an issue, then petrol everyday of the week for me… but it is an factor for me , so diesel wins it. But it’s not by much as time has gone on.

Anyways …. I’m about to order some arduino and canbus bobbins to try and figure out the dpf regen codes. I might split it into a separate thread where ideas can be talked about. V8 or else ...

Very interesting thread with bags of info. I just got my 405 v6 set up using WiFi but when it made the connection a lot of the sensors disappeared including the all important trigger point. I ordered the ELM WiFi by mistake maybe I would be better with Bluetooth.

RE my previous post, I suppose the DPF differential pressure can be the trigger point but how will I know when a regen is in Pro? There is a sensor for catalyst temperature but I can't remember if the cat is upstream or downstream of the DPF . Any ideas and advice most welcome

Read this entire thread very carefully, and get yourself the “Kot Kit” basically a cheap £12.50 Vgate BT OBD dongle, and £5.99 Car Scanner Pro App for your phone. After that, it’s simples to predict and manage Soot and Regens to maximise your service intervals. 👍🏼 “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Thanks for the replies. I got the wifi connection working and all seems fine, just need an excuse for nice long run to try it out now.
I couldn't understand why when I look at 'ALL Sensors' in demo mode it shows things like trigger point, regen status and exhaust temperatures but when I make the wifi connection they aren't there? also I'm still newfangled with the car but I can't find any service indicator on it. Maybe mine doesn't have it. I feel a few days of extensive fiddling coming on and a trip to sunny Seaham for enlightenment could be on the cards.

“All Sensors” is very confusing, but you can modify “Dashboard” to show only the very few sensors which are important, (and ignore the dozens of irrelevant ones). After that, as the Meerkats say, it’s Simples!  “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
