I'd rather pay that every year or monthly than go electric. The way I see it is, it's us range rover drivers that keep the gulf stream flowing.

Hi,

What with the price of fuel, road tax, insurance and servicing costs all going through the roof a cynic might conclude the man was trying to price us off the road.

But it'll be a dark day in hell before I'll join the herd in their spontaneously combusting whine boxes.

Well there are always two sides to every coin.

Personally I've been down the new car route and I'd rather have have something that brings a smile every time I climb in it with all the family and our junk, can do anything, can carry or tow anything and can go anywhere I choose in any weather for 700 miles round trip if I choose to on those days when it's all working well with all the comforts that come with it can't beat it.

I could of course, as I've done in the past, put down a massive deposit, spend a fortune each month just to cover the depreciation for 4 years and be left holding something I can't sell for anything near what it's supposedly worth, having to hire a van to go shopping, and not be able to do anything useful with it, after 3 years for more for way more cash than the price of an L322 in depreciation alone.

Of course then I'd have all those free weekends just sat in front of the tv with nothing to do, and not being able to go anywhere because I can't afford to put more that 10k miles on the clock each year.

Horses for courses , you pays your money and takes your choice.

Her argument was: "while we still can afford it"

And she's right, I don't drive it very often but every time I do I'm a happy chap.

Road tax in Germany isn't too bad for this one (in my view) at €570 per annum.
We are thinking about moving back to the Netherlands between 5 to 10 years from now because of better healthcare there (or rather, a more speedy and less faff about type of healthcare) but owning a FFRR in the Netherlands is downright unaffordable for people who aren't millionaires over there as the road tax for a V8 diesel fatty is :









€4000 per annum. and no, that does NOT include fees for anything else !

Theres absolutely no denying the Range Rover of any flavour (proper Range Rover that is not evoque / velair etc) is a very nice place to be, a great way to travel when they're working properly. Nothing better IMHO IF money is no object and reliability is not crucial etc. BMW i3 Electric Car

I see the other side of the garage pit so to speak, I went away for ages, had 2 Mercs, E320 estate, C240k, a BMW 335i and most recently the Audi A7, all had their foibles, but none were problem free, I spent nearly £2,000 in tyres alone for the Audi and replaced 3 wheels on the BMW due to cracks.

My Mrs Micra though, we bought brand new in 2014, had it 9 years now, only done 25k miles, she gets in, drives, gets out, day after day after day, never checks anything, only thing ever to go wrong, battery I replaced last year and a puncture. Other than the usual, oils, filters, tyres changed due to age, still only half worn etc. Very nippy around town, is on all season tyres, easy to park etc. Would not want to have an accident in it though, Micra vs. fatty, not much of a contest there.

Never bonded with it, always feels detached as though it's a thing, not a car to be driven or enjoyed, not good long journeys from a comfort perspective. Nothing wrong with it at all and cheap as chips, has all the toys but they're all tacky plastics, rattly bits. And boring just doesn't seem to cover it. I even opt for the RR to go shopping if I get think of an excuse to use it, like fill up with fuel.

Even though the German cars had top notch build quality, I always felt a little vulnerable at that level, there's anothe point for the fatty.

I know we moan about the running costs of the fatties, but we make a concious choice to go there, luckily we don't yet have the same taxes as our Irish & Dutch friends.

Hopefully LR will sort of the security on the 405s so we can get reasonable insurance rates in the city.
