Limp Home Mode on potential purchase, what might it be?

Hello, I have been looking for a 4.4 2011-12 L322 for a few weeks now.

Just viewed one, good spec and 85k on clock, and seller came across genuine (though not an enthusiast). Needs a couple of smart repairs on bodywork, but on the whole very clean and no rust (has lived in London).

When we went onto motorway on test drive it went into limp home mode, I suspect its because of DPF due to having been driven only short distances lately.

I was considering an offer which took into account a potential DPF clean, but is there many other (expensive) jobs this could be? Or would you advise to walk away?

Also, is there any guide prices for this type of car? Its on for 13.5k, by autotrader price's it seems fair.

what error messages flashed up? If it was a DPF fault it will come up amber DPF Full see handbook or red DPF full see Dealer. and there are different ways of clearing both of those.
Limp mode is usually something more serious and to be honest you would need a code reader to see what flagged it, worth even getting a cheap generic one to plug in and read, or bite the bullet and get the Gap IID Tool which is the ultimate, to be honest that is a dealer price for the car and a private sale would be much less, altho dealer would give you a warranty 2011 L322 Autobography - a lot of bells and some of the whistles...owner with no idea!

Yep, could be anything from a £20 sensor to many thousands of £'s....

No way to tell without diagnostics by someone who knows Land Rovers and can diagnose the correct failure from the faults listed....

No way to price it without further info.... Pete

If you really like the car and are prepared to spend up to £3k to get it sorted, offer him £10k , then walk away if he says no.

Hello everyone, thanks for the quick responses.

The error message was the red 'performance limited' one, it did not mention the DPF (though was not sure how to interrogate the faults on the dash).

Kicking myself I left my cheapo code-reader at home now, it was a fair drive away from me or I could pop back.

Thanks for the help, I think I will give one of the local RR specialists a shout to see if I could pay them to do a diagnostic for a reasonable sum (providing seller is happy).

If not, I think I will leave it, not wedded to the car but it seemed an honest one and clearly had not 'seen action' so suspension and body all seemed good condition for age.

Late L322 TDV8

If you don’t proceed I am going to be listing mine over Christmas as I can no longer afford to run multiple cars.

It’s a 2012 in brilliant condition, I genuinely think you would struggle to find a better example. The specialist who has carried out recent work commented how amazingly clean throughout it is. He carried out a full check over for me and said it was very rare for a 4.4 TDV8 to not have signs of oil leaks anywhere.

I purchased from a dealer almost a year ago and including the purchase price (£14600) it owes me approx £18000. It was a really good find as it was so clean, rust free, great colour combo and lots of the typical repairs carried out.

It’s a Vogue in metallic black with heated and cooled perforated ivory leather. It has HK logic 7 and lots of options. The interior is amazingly clean (I am super fussy with my cars) with no unsightly cracks, tears, scratches, piano black trim.

It has had the EGR and oil cooler sorted, all diffs and transfer box serviced, gearbox sump and correct fluid changed, all filters replaced and top quality millers engine oil. ECU was sorted early this year having been damaged over time by incorrect jump starts at a cost of £1000. There was a battery drain issue which was slowly draining the battery, I had the whole system checked and the drain resolved. A new battery was also fitted. All wiper blades are new and discs and pads show very little sign of wear.

I just spent another £1000 ish having the underneath waxoyled, a few minor maintenance items and a new front offside airbag. The nearside had been replaced fairly recently and the rears are all good (having broken down I asked the specialist to check over the whole system).

Tyres are all matching premium and wheels are in really good condition. There is a set of standard 19” Vogue wheels and matching tyres with the car and the option for a set of genuine LR 21” wheels with almost new scorpions.

Absolutely everything works as it should and having been treated to a machine polish it looks amazing when clean. It drives dead straight and tru with no suspension noises at all and pulls up straight with no pulling.

I am going to be listing for £14000 but as always will be open to reasonable offers. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Being a 4.4 TDV8, it's most likely an intake leak.

If the Seller hasn't got the issue sorted though, that's a warning sign, as they may know what it is and haven't got it fixed due to the expense. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Cheers Gary, yes he said it happened upon first purchase and the DPF needed a chemical clean. The reaction to the fault coming up indicated to me it hadn't happened before, otherwise would have had a pre-made excuse. Or maybe I an being naive, but either way the commentary here has been very useful. Intake manifold sounds expensive, unless its just a joint to be remade. Will see if Surrey Jag & RR can do a diagnostic for a reasonable sum, otherwise will leave it and find another.

Intake leak is different to intake manifold.

On pretty much every 4.4 TDV8, the 4x donut hoses, top intercooler hose and/or throttle body union fail, this gunks up the MAP sensor and eventually either flags a fault and restricted performance under acceleration, and fills the DPF with soot. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

If my test drives prove positive then it’s a case of finding the right spec one.
Then I’ll sell. Jan or Feb etc

Thanks Gary, that sounds an easier fix if the culprit.

Cheers for the heads-up Rob, good luck with the new car.
