I'm amazed that international car thieves would steal an L322 over an L405 / L460 / Newer RRS's (whatever their code is, sorry, they don't interest me).

They take up the same container space, same risk of imprisonment for the act of theft / export of stolen car, etc... So, if you're going to knick a car and sell it in some far away land - why not steal the most expensive car you can, instead of what, at best, is an 11 year old car with significantly less value?

It's not like we're talking about availability, there's an almost limitless supply of L405's sat outside many a household throughout this fine land.

Perhaps though, the stolen car buying people fraternity of Kenya (correctly) appreciate the L322 as a far superior vehicle to it's successors Twisted Evil ... Or they’ve been watching too many Harry Metcalfe / Clarkson video collaborations on the virtues of the L322 as the best car in the world… which I happen to think it is, but still you have to consider the risk / reward equation which no doubt our international car thiefs do - they're not thick! 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

They are not normally shipped in containers to Kenya, they are Roll On Roll Off ships

Also I think it's more a "Stolen to Order" situation, given that there are tens of thousands of L322's already in Kenya ( so plenty of L322 spares already in the breakers yards )

In Kenya, cars that are 84 months or older also attract less import duty as well (because 65% depreciation is factored in ) , so if we take MY11 example - the importer would pay well over 18 grand sterling just in car taxes !

Wow Shocked Regarding the import duty, it makes sense they knick a lower value car then - thanks, that's fascinating. Thumbs Up

As they're going to Keyna by RORO, it begs the question of what our authorities are doing to identify stolen vehicles going out? The stuff going to Albania is generally in containers as I understand it, so at least the UK authorities have the valid explanation that they don't open / inspect every container going out. But to be driven onto a ship, there must be an element of 'ringing' going on to hide the vehicles true identity at least?

Interesting that the vehicle is then legitimised by going through the expensive route of officially importing it into Keyna and paying a shed load of import duty. Obviously the Kenyan authorities don't give a rat's as to it's history / status so long as they get their taxes! Sad 1992 RR Classic 3.9 efi Vogue

Think you've hit the nail firmly on the head there as given the impact on insurers and Police to a lesser extent having to deal with it all you could have a small team sitting at the outbound ports inspecting stuff - I mean can anyone think of a particularly legitimate reason for large numbers of cars going out of the UK to a country like Kenya (or any other third country you wish to name like that) unless there's something else going on?

Maybe I'm over simplifying it but if you discovered your car had been stolen, shipped out of the Uk by driving it onto a ferry, and never seen again I think you'd be entitled to think the system isn't working.

It’s funny isn’t it that you can’t enter and exit a car park these days without ANPR tracking if you’ve paid or not and yet apparently you can load 100’s of vehicles on to RORO without anyone checking ownership ship status. TDV8 4.4 2012

This year I am paying £284 with Churchill, via a comparison website Very Happy Policy is a good one.

'BUT' I live in the boonies, my old bus will be well down on the list of desirable cars to be stolen and it's current value ( Peanuts Big Cry ) probably means that to thieves, it's not worth the time and trouble.

As for Ramblin Man's above post regarding ANPR cameras, most of them are installed by the Government, or companies to make money / fleece the motorists. As for cameras to catch stolen cars being loaded onto Ro/Ro's, they would not generate a profit, they would hinder their cargo / loading operations, so the Government and port owners are not interested. Most of the number plates will probably be false anyway.

I suppose the point is that they should be bothered. Pretty much every car over the last 20+ years can be identified quite easily through VIN identification markings that should match the documentation for the car - even with my rather amateur skills and failing eyesight I bet I could eyeball one without breaking into a sweat ..........

You would have thought the insurers if no one else would want to act on this type of activity.

I have an L322 tdv8 4.4 for which l pay about £200 per year on insurance, road tax not so cheap! I have been monitoring the price of L405 SV AB D's and boy are they falling! So made enquiries for insurance, £2k was the cheapest. I'll be sticking for now.....

last March I paid £168 with the RAC, after reading this post I thought I would have a look at what it would be now, the comparison sites all gave roughly the same price of around £250 - 280.

This would be the first time my premiums have risen since 2019 when I bought the car. If I remember right I paid somewhere round that in 2019.

Hopefully prices will fall before next March.

I’m looking to get my first L322 4.4 tdv8 .
I’m 42 with 18 year NCB and was quoted £600 a year including business use .

For comparison my BMW 740d that’s mapped to 370bhp is £750 a year to insure.
I also have a 110 2008 tdci Defender (currently rebuilding it) that was just over £600 to insure for 5000 miles last year .

I know the later Range Rovers have gone crazy for insurance but I think insurance for anything even remotely prestige is expensive now (the insurance companies know that they can get away with charging stupid premiums).

I use a broker called Norton insurance and they have been very good on all my cars .

Even Trackers are no good these days, the crooks use mobile jammers like this one below, which means the last point of connection with the Tracker monitoring company is the house or premises where the car was stolen, which really does not give the police a lot to go on 😡

I was with Direct line last year at just over £300. They wouldn't quote for this year. Went to Tesco Bank who were coming back on comp sites at £900+. This was reasonably competitive. Went direct the their website and got a year for £583, excellent result.
