Big ends run on the crankshaft journal’s at the bottom of the engine, so it’s unlikely to be heard at the top end |

The last two L322s (4.4 TDV8) with a tapping that sounded cam chain-ish, loudest in the top left front section of the engine, had knackered big ends. the loudest one needed crank and rods, the other we caught early enough to just need new bearings. |

Please find the below video, got some time to go out today and work on her. The fuel lift pump issue has gone must have been due to battery voltage?

Also only getting the two below faults which I think are simply because the fan belts are disconnected.

Hi there, by no means a 4.4 expert but I'm ex motor industry tech with 40+ years of enginw work Etc. Difficult from just a video but to me, seems very top end, hydraulic lifter type noise. My suggestions...........by a cheap stethoscope and safely test near n/s cam cover area. If it's there, the steth with pick this up and allow you to pin point a spcific area. Does it get worse hot or cold? Having listened a few times, I'd always stick to basics. Get the oil out, what does it look like. Check the oil filter, replace for best practice.

Thank you for your reply, I do have a stethoscope (cheap one from eBay from a while ago) but don’t seem to be picking up anything that sounds peculiar.

If your draining oil is it worth sending a sample for analysis. God forbid you have a bearing failing or similar but it could be picked up by oil analysis. It doesn’t sound heavy enough for a big end etc to me though. Have you looked at injector values with engine idling using diagnostics? There may be an odd one out which may lead to a particular cylinder to investigate. It’s possible an injector has “hosed” and caused a piston skirt to pick up ?

Look at pulse injector timings on iid tool, anything looking miles out from the others may give you a clue of a dodgy injector , if all similar timing chain jumped a tooth imo. |

Before you drop the oil, take the oil filter out and cut it open.
