FBH and lots of smoke !

Hi, this may be a common issue ?? I turned on the FBH this morning for the first time in a long time, a few minutes later there were clouds of diesel smoke everywhere ! Bit scary actually, whats the issue ? Is it a DIY fix or off to the garage ? Thanks folks

May well be 'old' diesel in the pipe, did you turn it off or did it clear after a while?
It may well need a new nozzle/burner assembly, they do corrode. The last one I did cost ~£80 for the parts but well worth it for the effect it has when working properly.

Thanks for the advice. I turned it off straight away but thought about terying it again later. It was a shock to the system at the time !

If it doesn't clear within 2-3 mins, I'd suggest turning it off and having it looked at - are you sure it was diesel smoke & not just water vapour? they can belt out a fair bit of water vapour drying out the combustion chamber, exhaust & silencer. There must have been combustion detected for it to keep going and not shutdown by itself.

My L322 did this when I first had it, I was cleaning it and temp was low. I had to move the car to let a friend out the drive and when I shut it off smoke everywhere I thought it was on fire!!

Luckily a few proper journeys and it was fine, never was an issue again

Hi

the FBH is a bit like any other engine, they like to have a good run up to temp, constant short starts/trips and they start up but don't get up to temp and shut off again, like other diesel engines let them get up to temp.

Thumbs Up

My car still randomly smokes from the FBH. It's exhaust pipe gets very hot when it does work.
I've read lots about stripping the combustion chamber to remove the carbon build up and how the glow plug gets stuck etc.
Has anyone tried one of these service kits?
