Hi everyone,

I'm preparing to replace the fluid in my front differential and the manual specifies to coat the fill plug and drain plug with a sealant before installing. But, they don't specify what sealant.

Earlier in the manual they specify to use Loctite 574 between the two casing halves.

Is this the same sealant to use on the fill and drain plugs?

You could, might be difficult next time you want to change the oil though, I use Loctite 577 (liquid PTFE) with no issues.

Would PTFE tape (used for water pipe connections) work for this?

I can't find the Loctite 577 locally but I can find Permatex 59214 high temperature thread sealant. I'm thinking this should be OK.

Any thoughts?

HA! I just answered my own question. Yes, they are equivalent products. The Permatex website has a Product Cross Reference page (https://www.permatex.com/contact/cross-reference/) that shows the two products can be interchanged.

Pretty much any good quality liquid PTFE will be fine, I get the Loctite supplied at work hence the referral.
The advantage of liquid over tape is that you can't overload the threads with liquid, using too much tape can result in damaged threads or hairline cracks in alloy castings - that won't happen with a quality PTFE liquid as the viscosity is within specific limits.

Larry, why not order a brand new filler & drain bung? They come with the correct sealant installed and ready to fit...

Yea, I could but I'd like to get this work done tomorrow (well, yesterday but tomorrow from when I asked the question ).

I found the Permatex sealant at a local auto parts store and did the work tomorrow (actually yesterday).
