Unless you spend >£20k you are going to be looking at high mileage examples with a list of jobs that need to be factored into the price and IME a £5k contingency fund is not unreasonable. You may get lucky and find some of the common jobs( oil cooler, AC, aux belt etc) have been done but as GDPR rules mean documentation containing personal info is removed from the car by the dealer you really just have to go on the condition and your own knowledge when buying from a dealer. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Valve on the compressor fails - easier to replace the whole compressor due to access. There are quite a few components on the front of the engine that can fail and the main time/ expense is removing the fan assembly to gain access so it can be worthwhile doing them all at the same time. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I'm only picking on Dr Rob because he said it in this thread, but it's something that gets said a lot. I'm not sure what is meant by short journeys, but if it's those of around 6-7 miles, then DPF issues are not my experience. We have two L322 4.4 TdV8's, both 2010, one is a Vogue the other a Vogue SE (only because that's what came along when I was looking). We have had both for more or less 4 years, one regularly plies the motorways on the much vaunted long journeys. However, the other rarely strays more than 7 miles, sits for several hours and then comes home (it's my Wife's car and she works regularly at a local riding school). The car has done around 23k miles in our ownership (roughly 6k miles per year) and has never had any DPF issues, not even an amber warning. Why might this be if short journeys are so problematic to the 4.4 diesel engine? Drives:

My opinion @rvbush, and it is only that, an opinion. All engines are different (that bit isn't an opinion). Some burn more cleanly than others, some use more oil than others, and after some have had lax maintenance, some are a bit more worn out than others (or even not properly worn in). I don't think DPF's are ever really the cause other than on a few genuine examples, most are simply a symptom of something going on elsewhere. If your car burns a little more oil on shorter journeys before everything gets up to temp then you'll be more likely to have DPF issues if you only do shorter journeys, while that same car if only used for longer journeys wouldn't have a problem. Meanwhile the one that burns less anyway isn't ever likely to have an issue. When we've been dynoing new engines in the past (on a proper engine dyno) we've had examples where we've been able to get one stock engine to 350bhp while another identical one (in theory) has made nearly 380bhp. Throw in wear and you can quickly end up at two cars the same with very different 'characteristics'.

If I was doing the OP's proposed anual mileage I'd be looking at getting a 5.0SC. Yes the budget will need to increase but it's likley to hold it's value more. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Ennoch, you may well have a point there. Neither of our cars ever needs any oil between services (I do 7500 mile oil changes) and both run on premium fuel (Shell as it happens, but only because there's local filling station). I'm wondering if these two are factors as well. Drives:

I have to agree, the supercharged petrol engined L322s are attractive for the low mileage user as they don't have turbos, EGRs or DPFs to go wrong/wear out. This must balance out the worse fuel consumption a bit for low mileages. Having said that, the 4.4TDV8 folks rave about the torque and eight speed ZF gearbox, which does sound a lovely combination. I say all this based on having had a 3.6 TDV8 and now a 4.2 SC, both of which are/were lovely but quite different in their torque delivery, as one would expect.

Thanks everyone for their replies, but in a crazy whirlwind of a few hours having a friend of a friend contact me, I ended up buying one tonight!

It feels rushed but was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

2011 Vogue TDV8. 92k, FSH, knowledgeable and friendly bloke who's had the local Land Rover specialist sort the oil-leak / intercooler issue about 18 months ago. New Pirelli tyres all round, 4 keys, new suspension arms and bushes all round in past 1000 miles, new suspension air bags all round.

Tested everything from the checklist, bloke was happy to let me do as much testing as I wanted. Must have spent about 90 minutes! Couldn't do any more.

Left a deposit and I pick up tomorrow!

Having driven for a couple of hours and finally getting onto a proper A road (not always so easy in Norfolk), I have one problem.

A loud air whoooosh noise under proper load and acceleration, from the drivers side I reckon.

Split intercooler hose somewhere? It's not a big split, the power delivery is still decent. It also doesn't go into limp mode. I'm going to drive it past our local specialist to get it diagnosed.

I'm not too disheartened, I can't find another fault. I am putting it in for a new MOT and tracking / wheel alignment today because it's just something that makes my head rest easier!
