Years affected by Hedgehog issue?

Greetings all.

It's possible that the brand new battery in my 2009 L322 3.6 TDV8 went totally dead over the course of two weeks of not using it due to me leaving the IID tool plugged in (accidentally).

However, ever since purchasing this beast a year ago, the screen for the entertainment system seems to have had a mind of its own... sometimes it comes on just when I unlock the door, other times when I start the vehicle, and other times not until five minutes after I've been driving. And the orange light on the power button flashes on and off whenever it feels like it, and I'm rather sure that's not meant to happen.

I saw a video by someone who was pointing out that he was experiencing similar issues in his 2006 (I believe), and traced it to the hedgehog (also known as the heater blower resistor, part #JGO000021).

I know these were used through 2012, but I am wondering if anyone knows if it has been determined if this part is the culprit in electrical gremlins only up through certain years... or if all L322 are susceptible.

Many thanks.

The "Hedgehog" resister is part of the "shutting down sequence" and can be responsible for many issues, especially flat battery ones.

Fiddly to replace but always worth replacing.

BTW, if yours is an original it may have a bigger heatsinc (spines) than a genuine replacement.

Right, I'll go ahead and replace it. Strange that essentially all the replacement versions seem to have middling reviews as to their reliability. Will give it a shot though and see what happens. Next step is to check the wiring under the driver's sill plate and make sure that hasn't chafed some wires.

I had a very similar fault, BUT NOTE MINE IS A 2006, so this is possibly wrong for your car, my screen seemed to have a life of it's own and would come and go at random intervals, and over time spent more time with the screen showing the LR logo and the orange light flashing, it turned out to be a faulty bluetooth module in the rear left compartment, once I bypassed that, it was back to normal operation. My bluetooth unit is the type with two connection plugs I am not sure which type you will have. I think it is the same for 2006 - 2009 ?

A by-pass loop is cheap and very simple to fit as an easy cheap test, if this is not the fix, then it rules this out of the equation. Hope this helps.

Aha, well that could certainly be it… I bought the truck with a Bluetooth set up installed by the former owner and, not being able to get it to work after 23 seconds of fiddling with it (audio being near the bottom of what’s important to me, coming somewhere after, oh I don’t know, getting where I’m going), I haven’t bothered trying to learn how to use it. I’ll take a closer look now at what exactly he did to install this thing. Thanks.

Just to add to my above post, from posts I have read on here and experience, if you are not experiencing any other electrical gremlins then it is unlikely that the hedgehog is to blame for the problem. It seems that amongst other faults, one of the most common problems with a faulty MSR is lack of control of climate system air blower speeds (someone please correct me if I am wrong ) Whistle

There are several handy videos on you tube relating to this problem with the screen. Hope this helps Thumbs Up
