steering column slip ring clock spring

I have started to get a click noise from the centre of the steering wheel when correcting after a turn. The indicators still work and cancel correctly. The click I am presuming is coming from the slip ring and is not the usual operation noise. Any info on this, is it a lubrication issue or something about to give up? 2007 TDV8 VSE

Did this get resolved? I’m experiencing the same but intermittent clicking on my MY12.

It just stopped making the click, no apparent reason for it to start and then stop. 2007 TDV8 VSE

So my clicking has returned and driving me nuts. Anyone got any suggestions what's going on. Indicators work and correct as they should. If I am not indicating but making a turn, parking, sharp bend, carpark manoeuvre etc I get clicks the same as if the indicators were on and correcting as I turn the wheel. Is there something that needs lubricating or is the slip ring knackered. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Needs looking at, it's not hard to get the airbag off and see what's happening.... Don't put the ignition on with the airbag unplugged unless you have a fault reader/clearer the airbag fault is a hard fault and won't reset without a diagnostic tool.... Thumbs Up Pete

I seemed to have cured it, at least for the moment. After trying out a few scenarios whilst on a quiet drive, Indicating right, turning sharp right on full lock whilst still holding the indicator stalk firmly up, once the turn has been made release the stalk and let the steering centre and the stalk return as normal to off. No Idea what it did but for the rest of my trip with a few left and right turns no more superfluous clicking. Not holding my breath.. 2007 TDV8 VSE

Wayne, I don't think slip rings have been used since car manufacturers started using the "clock spring".

I think my 1938 Vauxhall had one. Ron B. VK2OTC

Yes I would call it a clock spring but looking for a used one from the UK they are regularly called slip rings. Whatever, I am going over to the UK next month and plan on picking one up, they seem pretty cheap. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/225385067699?ha...yahi 2007 TDV8 VSE

An update on this, I picked up a second hand clock spring from the UK on a recent visit as the clicking still comes and goes. After fitting it no more clicking but airbag fault. Rechecked everything twice and still airbag fault so deduce replacement clock spring is faulty or I have damaged something. Have a good look at old and new clock spring and only thing evident is all grease gone from old and a spung steel clip seems flatter on the old. Plenty of grease, bend spring a little then refit the old. Happy days no click or airbag warnings
I used Autel diagnostics on the airbag fault, showed the fault with the new ( used) clock spring, but when I refitted the original the fault was no longer present.

Good news all round, the greasing and bending of the spring seems to have done the job and I would go as far as say any faint friction noise when turning the wheel has also gone.
I sent a message to the E-Bay seller to let them know they had sold me a defective part but did not think anything would come by it as several months had passed since the purchase. I was delighted to get a response and apology offering a replacement FOC. I took the offer but hopefully it will be kept as a spare as my fix seems to be holding. 2007 TDV8 VSE
