VAT and Customs Duty when returning from EU

My daughter is off to Germany next week by car for a few days to get measured for and purchase some bespoke shooting clothing (she shoots precision air rifle).

The supplier won’t charge her VAT as we aren’t in the EU and I understand that she will need to declare this to customs and pay VAT and duty when returning to the UK. Value is around £3k so way above any allowances.

I believe the declaration needs to be done online before she returns so I want to make sure she gets it right to avoid any hassles at the UK border.

Anyone familiar with this process and how easy/complex it is?

Tell her to leave all her other clothes in her suitcase and wear what she's bought. It'll be 2nd hand then and not classed as new so worth significantly less Smile 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Unfortunately, shooting clothing is very stiff and would be impossible to drive in. She can barely walk when she's wearing it Laughing

Paying the VAT and Duty isn't an issue, just want to make sure she follows the correct process. 2021 D350 Fifty Edition - Carpathian Grey

This tells you most if it .

She us allowed £630.00 free , so take 5 people and 5 separate invoices for separate bits , that’s fine. Still gets the zero vat in export. Nil rate import .

Or pay

Bill might of been wrong,

Seems it’s £1,000.00 unless made in the eu, in which case might be £5,500 for duty, vat is not duty.

Thanks Bill

That HMRC guide seems pretty clear - less than £5,500 and made in EU, no duty

The eu side, one bit I didn’t know was you have three months to export the item, thus allowing your daughter to buy it and bring some on another occasions if trying to duck the vat limits .

Have always found, with one notable exception, customs to be very fair and jolly, crystal glasses through as nil, or large screen as art …‘twas the forgotten (really) earrings in the suitcase that annoyed the customs officer /cow off at 3 am in the morning…. Or was it the £50.00 notes I -pulled from a stash to pay , what dun it!
