My L405 Maintenance and Modifications

First few wee jobs planned for next week.

Oil and filter change
Poly front arb bushes. See how they fit before I order rears
Replace Xenon’s for LEDs
Investigate sloppy ride
Investigate humming noise from passenger side front

Interested to see how you get on with the ARB bushes, as the rubber ones seem to wear out fairly quickly. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Not as productive as as first thought. Ended up up going away in the Van.

Oil and filter changed, not happy with the amount of oil extracted via the oil extraction tube. It left around 1.5litres of oil in the sump not to mention the mess / hassle of cleaning everything up once done. I will stick to removing the oil via the sump plug. Much easier and cleaner affair.

Both airboxes had to be removed to fit the new Headlight bulbs. Easy enough job. Big difference from original to LEDs. Pity they try to burn a hole in the road about 6 foot ahead of the car. Will need to be adjusted a bit higher.

Someone fitted K&N filters. Pretty clean so would suggest they are quite new. Not a fan of oiled filters. Will prob buy stock and replace them

Did not attempt the ARB bushes. Does not look and easy job. Will tackle when I have more time. Pain with the nuts being on top and hidden

Oil leak in transfer box. Looks like its the Seal and not the casing. Another job to look at

The Apple interface never arrive before I left with the Van so will need to look at it next time home.

Other issues that have sprung up. Air con stopped blowing cold air. Lower tailgate stopped lowering when the button is pushed. Can lower by hand and then will power back closed. Driver rear side dropped height when left sitting for a week. This car is going to keep me busy I think. X5 40d

Extracting the oil via a suction pump will drain exactly the same as removing the sump plug as the drain tube 'is' the sump plug Most people use the Draper oil extractor as the electric pumps can't run long enough before overheating to extract the full oil volume. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I used the draper oil extractor on my previous 4.4 tdv8 l322 and my current l405 and had no issue removing the full volume of oil.

Perhaps the electric pump your using isn't able to pull sufficient vaccum to empty the full contents of the sump?

The pump was fine, it kept going. It started sucking air which would suggest the sump was empty. I made sure nothing had moved or came lose and tried again still sucking air. I thought it weird so tested the pump in the waste oils and pumped fine. I searched YouTube and another guy had a similar outcome (not sure which pump he used). Will be removing the sump plug going forward to be 100% sure the sump is empty. Cant go wrong that way.

Agree there is quite a bit or corrosion on that rails. I wonder if the sump guard is contributing to the corrosion. Water getting in but limited airflow to dry the water off. Not sure really. Wonder why they chose Steel and not aluminium like the rest under there X5 40d

That's northern Scotland cars for you... I would seriously look at doing some corrosion prevention work asap! The brake lines are still crappy old steel! As well as the internals of the brake calipers, the drive shafts and several other parts under the cars...

If you get enough rust build up on the driveshafts it will eventually foul the seals in the diffs and they will leak and could leave a nasty big rebuild bill!

and yes I would question your drain method? As our suction machines pull every bit of oil out of the sump... I have proved this by removing the sump bungs and getting next to nothing more out sir...

Thanks for the info, will deffo start looking at preventative measures. Yeah, quite a low mileage car this which looks like its sat about a bit which doesn't help

Will just remove the sump plug, easy enough and confirms 100% what is in there and I get it all out. X5 40d

Please don’t think I was picking fault for picking fault’s sake sir… It constantly amazes me just how badly cars from Scotland rot! And if you’re an owner and you’re not knowledgeable about these things? You may miss the window of opportunity to prevent huge bills through unwilling neglect…

The suction tube is attached to the sump where the drain plug would be so you can't get anymore out with that method
