I went and bought the wrong tow bar…

So after researching and trawling the bay of E, I purchased and collected a tow bar at a bargain price!
It’s a Westfalia, and suitable for the later L322 (or so I thought).

I spent Thursday sanding, derusting, and painting everything ready for it to be installed.
And today I dismantle the car to mount it and… it just won’t go!

The metal tube that goes across the back of the car touches the bottom of the boot where the spare wheel is. It will not fit.

This is the tow bar I purchased…

Can anyone confirm what towbar I should have bought? I have a 2011 model L322 Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Past rides:
2014 Audi Q7 3.0d (good riddance)

2011 L320 HSE 3.0 sdv6
2014 Jaguar XF-RS 5.0 supercharged
2007 BMW 535D
2005 Mini Cooper S

Hi,
When I bought mine it came with this frame already fitted. I honestly dont know if it will fit yours but you can see the cross bar
that you mention, on mine it has a centre section that is lower and it does miss my
spare wheel well and is made by Westfalia

I thought that style was for the pre-2006 model so discounted them when looking. But yes, it does drop whereas mine does not. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Pretty sure the towbar armature fitting is the same for all L322’s from 2002-2012.

I’d recommend seeking out a genuine used Westfalia item per the picture above, fitting will be spot on, it looks so much better than the aftermarket tow bars and can be reconditioned easily enough before fitting. Jonathan

Had a quick look and it seems they’ve stopped selling them for the L322, maybe worth a call though. Jonathan

Will need replacement electrical connections as that has the earlier type with a white interface box. On the later generation there's a single grey connector behind the spare wheel on the UK nearside and no additional module required. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica.

That’s what I understood, with some exhaust hanger differences…

The towbar was from an L322 and is a Westfalia tow bar. Hence thinking I was safe! Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I spotted that too. If still there when I’m paid I’ll have it… although at that price I doubt it’ll be there long. Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

Lucky for me I have the electrical bits which were for the tow bar that doesn’t fit! Brand new and designed for my model and just plugs in Currently driving: 2012 L322 SE Overfinch 4.4 tdv8

I thought I'd got a bargain at £320 until it arrived and I could see that it had been cut off at the front, see pics. Hoping that ebay will ensure I get my money back? But carriage was £120, so thinking I may have been taken for a ride.
